For me, it sounds unreasonable to put animals to death just because they have a disease or injuy that causes pain. Instead they should be treated as much as possible, vaccines should be developed and if they can't fill their purpose to become food (as many people see it, not I) then they should instead be able to live a free life on the farms.
For many of us humans, putting someone to death because they have an untreatable condition that causes pain, is not an option. And personally I don't think there's any difference between a human's life and an animal's, and even the most accepted philosophic argument doesn't really hold up. I'm not trying to make this an animal ethics discussion, I'm just sharing the full extent of my views on the subject. Therefore (and because of the reason SoC took up) I won't elaborate my views on the topic anymore than this :p

I understand the fact that something's life, even if it is an animal, doesn't morally belong to us... The lamb would definitely have died naturally since as it couldn't crap, it couldn't eat either. But its owners saw fit to put it to death because of the pain it would suffer... besides, millions of lambs, cows, chickens, die everyday so we can eat at KFC, McDonalds, etc. I'm not saying it's right but I agree with the owners' decision.
