Idk about you guys, but it gets on my nerves when my phone conversations are being listened to by a person i don't know. I get the whole "we're at war" thing, but it really is an invasion of privacy.

As as long as it's official government business, AND NOT CIVILIANS DOING IT, then it's fine by me. I really have nothing to hide. I mean, if it's war related, then fine, but imagine all the drug dealers and pedofiles and all that crap they could catch on it.. it would be amazing.. but on the other hand.. i don't think many big things like this go smoothly so i'm against if they can't get their crap together

Okay, I understand the whole "we're at war" situation. And I'm sure a lot of people could be "caught" breaking the law however, instead of wire-tapping phone lines, if the United States government got their shit together they could prevent a lot of terrorist acts before they happen. For example, since nine eleven the airport security has been "tightened". This is false. Airport security has not been "tightened". Airport security has finally begun operating the way it was intended; the only difference is that now people are doing their jobs and there are more people "employeed" there. It's pretty ****ing sad that it takes something like nine eleven to open our governments eyes just enough to start forcing Airports to behave the way they should have in the beginning. And now, with the whole idea of wire-tapping. I don't agree with wire-tapping everyone but I do believe it's procedure to wire-tap those who are currently undergoing investigation by the Government. But as far as a Nation-wide wire-tap... that's just ridiculous. Period.
Hah! You'll be amazed when Canada, Mexico an the US joins together in the Northern America alliance and you're next to get you phone tapped. Fortunately for me, I live in Sweden and it's completely illegal here. There was a proposition regarding wire-tapping last year I think, but it didn't pull through. The government has power, sometimes it is abused and sometimes it is underutilized, what else is new? the government is made of people; that means that the government isn't perfect. I actually dont know why i'm taking this stance, probably just to be the devils advocate.

That's not true. If you let the government hear all of your calls, it's just one step into letting them control everything. The media comes next. Demonstrations will not be allowed. After that you'll get a total regim. And just having opinions on what party you wish were ruling, would be considered a threat. Besides, just because you may have sympathy for things that aren't legal, or if you joke about them, it could quickly turn into an arrest. You need privacy, and you can't get that if you think people are listening to all of your conversations. Besides, it could easily be used as blackmail, if you had secrets and the government got to know them. Yes, they actually do use blackmail.
I think that's a little extreme. I have never heard of any country or anything going backwards, but that doesn't mean it has (and I would like proof of that).
Well you could look at many Arabic countries. They used to be 1337 at healthcare, medicin, fabrics etc. but after some incidents, they were slowed down in their progress. All that was needed was a war. Ring any bell?
1337 = leet I meant that they were among the best in the world at those things. And yes, that's what I was talking about. But you can also include the war on drugs. "Wars" on ideas are never won, it's just about having a common enemy in order to get more power.
