im trying to configure my whole comp to run on proxy.. (not just internet explorer)
ive read Proxies: A Newbies Guide (viewtopic.php?f=22&t=4263) and near the bottom it says:
Go into your "Control Panel" and choose "Internet Settings". Once you are in Internet Settings, click on "LAN Settings". You will see a box labeled "Use a proxy server for your LAN..."
when i go to my control panel i only see "internet options" which is for IE only... i dont have "internet settings"...
im using XP with Service Pack 2...
i want to download the igloo aber but im not sure if it has a proxy setting so i wanted to set-up my whole comp...
    Any help??

you can only set your browser to run on a proxy, or a program to run on a proxy if it has proxy support. But for most programs, running them on a proxy will just cause them to run a lot slower, meaning they won't work well (especially autobuyers), which is the reason a lot of programs don't have proxy support.

In that topic, Sammi talks about a proxy for the whole PC.

    mmh fair enough :D

I still wouldn't recommend using this method for running programs though.. it will just make them work slowly over the internet :\

Oh but you will recommend it...you will! * evil laughter *

But, every single proxy will make you run slower than normal, that is no difference with VPN proxys, but, seriously, i never found the lag so bad, i've used this alot with online games to ( software games ) and the games are always still playable!

some proxies claim that they cache websites, which makes their proxies run faster, is this true?

There have been a couple of changes to the XP since the introduction of IE7

Now to set the proxy for the entire computer, here is what you do:

Go into your "Control Panel" and choose "Internet Options". Once a window pop's up called "Internet Properties", click on "Connections" then click on "LAN Settings". You will see a box labeled "Use a proxy server for your LAN..." Add the address and the port and voila... your computer connects thru the proxy to get to the net.

Now other points in this topic:

When you go thru a proxy, it WILL make any site you want to go to slower. It's obvious!.

Take for instance... you going directly to neofriends from your computer. It's not a direct route. In fact, you might have to go thru 10 or more hops (different computers) just to get to neofriends. Now.... put yourself on a proxy.... and it might take 10 or more hops just to get to that proxy, and the ten or more hops to get to neofriends.

When it comes to the internet... less is best and you're always going to be as fast as your slowest connection.

This is true and it adds a host of other things that can be used by neopets to find... and disable your accounts.

As I have point out many times in the past. Proxies do work.... but finding a safe, reliable proxy that isn't being used by someone else to access neopets and AB... well... there's just no guarantess.
