are u refering to free downloaded music? cos there are many types of free music. But if u are talking about free downloaded music then i would say kaaza/ limewire although i have stopped downloading things from there for some time
my friend is using it but he does not find any problem with stuff screwing your computer. In any case get a good fire wall and virus scan.

is yours some trial version? does it have auto updates? if it is not a trial and it does have auto updates then i think it should be enough.
Limewire is pretty good for music. Yes, there are traps to fall into, but you just need to know which ones look fishy. Like the ones that are 10kb for a song. Don't click on that. Or the ones that say "10% off free music!" Sure, not exactly like that, but you get the gist of it For actual albums, try downloading the program utorrent and then getting the torrent files from some places like http://www.mininova.org or http://www.demonoid.com Make sure there are some seeds there, some guys able to upload the files.
Limewire is good for popular music. Try Garageband.com, many artists letyou download their music free (many are quite good) Lesser known artists, who havent had their break yet.
I use eMule. There you find complete albuns with 192-256kbps quality, discographies, movies, cartoons, ebooks, etc. It's like an encyclopedia of data!
limewire or iMesh. But if you pay i would suggest iTunes because its safe and has the titles, artist, and album of all the songs.
