Stairs of Truth Written and Edited By: Jake Balla and Caytlyn Kittlitz ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dominic’s Beginning Prologue “Rupert, I’m pregnant,†Eleanor sighed after a long silence. Without looking up, Rupert responded in a hesitant tone, “Who are you kidding, your only19. You can’t have kids.†Eleanor rose from the chair and gently pushed it under the solid oak table that Rupert had crafted and embodied with a plaque significant to their marriage shortly after they got back from the wedding. They had been wed that year, and the plaque read: March 15th, 1988. Eleanor picked up her coat and sighed, “Whether you like it or not I’m pregnant. And four months, mind you. I hardly believe you haven’t noticed.†Looking completely puzzled Rupert stood up in a panic, knocking over the chair he had been sitting on. Before speaking Rupert grew very concerned quickly. The he opened his mouth and breathed in deeply, and then let it out slowly. Then he spoke, “You should really sit down, you don’t want to over do yourself now,†What was once a concerned smile on his face quickly turned into a angry scowl, “Please do tell my why you haven’t told me sooner, why you didn’t care enough to let me know that you are pregnant. For Gods sake, you’re going to have a kid soon and you didn’t have the decency to tell me when you became pregnant? If you weren’t going to have a kid soon I’d leave right now.†Eleanor began to back away from him in his state of anger. When her back hit the wall, she turned away and began to sob to herself. It was the first time he had ever raised her voice with her. As months went by, the tension faded and Rupert regained love for his wife; that violent and wild flame that he knew would never leave him. “You know. I don’t think I would even be here right now if I hadn’t seen that ultrasound. I love that kid already,†Rupert trailed on as Eleanor’s face went from a mild smile to a foreseen face of a girl who was terrified. “Rupert? I... I... I think my... I think I’m going to have... the baby... RIGHT NOW.†As the next day came and went, Eleanor was holding a new baby boy when Rupert entered the room as he grinned from ear to ear and said, “I think you should name him Dominic. I like that name.†And so it was, the child’s name was Dominic. Within the next two years, Eleanor passed away from a severe case of Leukemia. After countless trial and error situations Rupert took Dominic from his crib at night where he lay, and placed him on an orphanage doorstep, without giving any information at all. But before Rupert left Dominic alone on the dimly lit doorstep, he looked down on his own chest, then looked at Dominic, “Here my son, my only son, I give this to you, and with this you can do a great many things. Goodbye my son, my Dominic. Goodbye forever.†He ripped the pink pendant off his neck and put it around his sleeping child. He scribbled a simple note and placed it in Dominic’s blanket, as well as a photograph of the three of them together. It read: My dear Dominic, You are two years old now on this day. Your mother, Eleanor Marie, has died from Leukemia. She was twenty-two. I hope you will remember us, Rupert. After this incident, Rupert set fire to his home to remove all evidence of his life and his family’s. With that he went into the centre of town where a single oak tree stood. His Destination Chapter 1: A Boy in the Park As a tree uprooted from the ground in the park, leaves began to scatter. It was a windy day; windiest day of the year. Some began blowing in the wind, some lie still on the ground. The leaves went in every which direction. No one thought much of the leaves blowing in the wind. After all, seeing leaves in the wind was nothing out of the usual. If you were listening closely to the people walking around the park you could hear people saying: “Just another autumn day in Calgary,†or: “Too many leaves nowadays.†At this time, a boy was walking home from school through the park. This boy wasn’t thought of much from his schoolmates. The boy had brown hair and large, bright green eyes. He was in Junior High, around 13 or 14. His height was a little over average, and he wore a T-shirt, jeans, and running shoes most of the time. His name was Dominic. Dominic had little to hide from the world. He was an orphan, a B student, moved around a lot; not much to him. Most thought of him being a strange kid mainly because he always wore a diamond pendant, a pink diamond to be exact, hanging on a simple, silver chain. This wasn’t any ordinary pendant of course. It had powers, special powers, with greater strength then most things on this earth. Dominic didn’t know anything about that. He only thought that it was a family heirloom; which is the reason why he had kept it all these years going through so many different orphanages and foster homes. The only person who truly knew about the powers the pendant held, was his father; a father who was long gone. Dominic’s fathers name was Rupert and had abandoned him when he was only two years old; shortly after his mother died. Dominic hardly remembered those days, when he had a family to speak of. He had been too young. His mother had been only 19 when she had Dominic. Her name was Eleanor Marie. She died from Leukemia at age 22. When she was alive, she rocked him to sleep and sang songs with her sweet, melancholy voice, on blustery nights. All the family friends thought she was the sweetest, yet strongest thing. No one could have ever imagined what Rupert would’ve done with out her. And one day the Leukemia hit her hard. She spent only a night in the hospital and was gone. A week later, Rupert was so depressed that he dropped Dominic off at an orphanage and hit the road. No one knew where he went and if he would ever come back. When Dominic came to the uprooted tree, he stopped. He stared at it for a while. It was an odd tree; perhaps a _______. But ______s weren’t common here. Leaves from the uprooted_______ blew around and past him. One leaf hit his pendant and the world went dark. When Dominic awoke he felt somewhat drowsy. He slowly rose only to find he was on a bright platform that appeared to be hovering in pure darkness. He stumbled around and couldn’t believe his eyes. Dominic could vaguely make out 4 staircases through the blinding light and above each staircase, were dimly lit signs above them; the Stairs of Truth, the Stairs of Fate, the Stairs of Destiny, and the Stairs of Deception. “I wonder what this means,†He thought to himself. He also started wondering where he was and what exactly happened to him. After he pondered for a while he figured out that this must be about a life and if this was about his life or someone else’s. He thought to himself again, “I guess the only way I’ll get answers is if I go up these stairs. I guess I can always go back if I don’t like what I see.†He was dead wrong. As he began towards one of the staircases, voices started chanting from every which direction, “Dominic. Dominic. Dominic.†“What? Who is it? Who are you?†The voices were calling him in every which direction, but they first led him to the Stairs of Fate. He began up the Stairs of Fate to see memories, memories of his younger childhood flashing on each step. On one step, Dominic passed an image of his mother, smiling at him. He saw his father and mother glowing at each other sitting on the big old sofa in the middle of their old living room. As he past each step, he seemed to not remember anything he saw in the previous steps. He began moving slower, as if all the fading memories were weighing him down, slower until he reached the top. All that was on the platform was a door, on the door was an image that seemed to be what looked like an old photograph of his father. He pushed open the door to see a blinding white light. Dominic lost all consciousness and seemed to drift back to the platform. When what appeared to be the lights, coming back on, Dominic knew that what he had previously believed he experienced wasn’t just in his head. He chose the Stairs of Destiny this time. When he started up the Stairs of Destiny, a strong force came upon him almost like he shouldn’t be there, like an unearthly force telling him he shouldn’t be there. Without following the odd feelings, Dominic while hunched over, stepped up onto the top platform. He saw a dark figure appear out of the shadows and held out a scythe and slashed him. Or appeared to be slashing at him and missed. “Maybe a hallucination,†thought Dominic. Without any sign or hesitation the platform crumbled under where he stood. As he fell, he expected to fall until he hit something, and fall to his death perhaps, but instead he slowly floated down, a slow peaceful drift. Dominic felt so much peace within him that he began to fall into a deep slumber. He was jolted awake when he fell back to the main platform. Like a good dream gone bad he glanced every which way to make sure he was safe before standing up. Dominic took one look at the Stairs of Deception, and thought otherwise. Deception would be a bad idea. He started towards the Stairs of Truth, and before he could even step on the first stair the voices began chanting again, but in a different tone. “One way out Dominic, choose wisely. One way out Dominic, choose wisely. One way out Dominic, choose wisely.†After hearing this, Dominic turned back and ran up the Stairs of Deception. Half way up, the stairs behind him began to fall, one by one, Dominic, not aware of this, came to a slower pace. The falling stairs caught up to him, when it was just behind the step he was on, he staggered backwards. Noticing the blackness behind him Dominic fell. The same flashing light came into view, when it dimmed out Dominic was once again on the platform. The only chance he had left was on the Stairs of Truth. On the way up his life was playing in front of him. All the lies became obvious; all his regrets came into play in one moment. He made it half way up the stairs before they too had shattered. As he fell this time it was what seemed to be a long rough fall. He fell for what would have seemed to be hours. Without any reason or signal he hit the platform with a thud. He wasn’t in complete darkness in the middle of nowhere; he could have been heard for miles. As he rose from the ground back to his feet a sound rustled from the open platform behind him. When he turned, the platform was blank, no stairwells, just a gray fog as the only source of light. When his eyes began to adjust, he saw something in the mist. Due to a quick reaction, he changed position to a fighting stance. The only thing he could see other than the darkness through the fog, was what appeared to be a moving photograph of his father. Almost like cinematography, but not quite. It was what his father had looked like in one of the only photographs he had left of his family. As Dominic saw nothing more, the fog around him began to dim until all that could be seen was his own hand right in front of his face. He began to walk forward, Feeling his way into the once underestimated darkness. All at once Dominic heard a loud noise behind him. When he turned to see the cause of the commotion, turning very carefully, but with a speed caused by being in a state of panic, all that was could be seen was long brown hair quickly drifting down into the deep never ending darkness. If it had not been for the newly shining, overly bright light he wouldn’t have seen her. The light also showed a glass like finish on the edges of the platform. All around him was this glass. The glass arose higher in the darkness and the darkness became trapped behind the glass. As Dominic rose his eyes up into the sky he could see a vastly wide plot of land. In the centre of this floating island was a blinding light blazing down like the sun, slowly the light began to dim upon Dominic. Looking down and around him, Dominic saw a hole in the glass, that hadn’t been there before. In a flash of silver, Dominic saw the long brown hair run behind a newly appeared door. At this point Dominic’s eye sight began to weaken from the dimming light. Dominic ran towards the door with fear and a sudden rush of adrenalin of trying to escape the darkness before it was too late. The light was so dim Dominic began to believe there wasn’t anything in front of him anymore, until, with his outstretched arms, he touched cold, solid rock. Using it to pull him up off the ground he had begun to crawl on. With his hands still on the door Dominic began to feel the rest of the door, top to bottom, side to side. He felt what seemed to be a hollowed-out print of what used to be a stone much smaller than the one he felt on the handle of the door. The pendant around Dominic’s neck began to rise like a magnetic force bringing it up higher than his own head. Dominic immediately took off the pendant from around his neck and attempted, clumsily, to place it in the hollowed print. After thrusting it around the hollowed area for a bit Dominic’s pendant finally gave in and clicked in place. Chapter 2: Quest to the castle The door unlocked and creaked open a bit and Dominic slipped through the small crack with ease due to his tall, thin build. When he stepped into the leaf strewn town streets, he looked at all the leaves that were there. They were the same _______ leaves as the ones he encountered in his hometown. Dominic kicked a couple of the _______ leaves around and found that underneath them were arrows pointing towards something in the distance. The arrows pointed to alleyways and that ended, as Dominic could see, as dead-ends. “I am for sure not going down any of them streets,†he muttered to himself. He lifted his head to see a castle with 3 strangely shaped towers. Dominic stood there, thinking about everything that had happened so far. The town he was in seemed to be so peaceful and quiet. Dominic began to fade himself, into a pleasant slumber, while standing. As his knees began to buckle, he jolted awake, to see a person, a person with a white hood and scruffy blond hair, standing in the window of the tower on the castles farthest corner. It was also a tower that had a lop-sided look to it. The person was staring at Dominic through piercing misty green eyes. Dominic had held a strong focus on the person until terrifying sounds in the distance shook his concentration. Blood curdling screams in the distance rang out and echoed along every cobblestone street and cried out above all the tight brick and wooden row buildings. Dominic turned with such great a force that the leaves around him on the streets rusled. He started at a deliberate, cautious pace towards where the sound came from. Before long he broke out into a run. As he neared farther towards his destination the streets behind him began to shift, making it impossible for him to turn back. The screams grew louder as Dominic wound his way in and out of the cobblestone streets. After some time the screams began to fade, “Damn, it’s too late!†he cried out in anguish as he made his way down a winding street. The bricks on the street he was now on began to age as he passed them step by step locking him in time. The voice from the platform chanted again except in a more human voice, “Too late...I warned you...Too late...I warned you...Too late...I warned you.†Looking around, Dominic saw a hooded figure standing on a newly formed wall. Without any reason the figured jumped down, this figure was wearing a black hood. When the figure spoke Dominic’s jaw dropped. It was the same person who spoke to him about what was to come. A small smirk came across Dominic’s face. It was until 4 figures from behind him stepped out of a door from a formed wall. The door began to slowly shut. One of the figures shoved his foot into the door. That he realized that there was no escape. As the figures closed in on him, he realized that there was no escape. He then tried ramming his elbows into the figures to try and push them away. When he hit them, it was like pushing air. He basically just went through them; like ghosts. The figures had no shape or form. In a jolt of frost on his arm Dominic looked up to see one of the figures hands on his arm. The figures hands immediately froze stuck to him. This happened many more times. After he was secured the figures dragged him into the room from which they had come. With his eyes still wide open, Dominic saw there were two rooms. The one he was in and the one Beside it, with a large opening dividing the two. The other room was completely absorbed in darkness. In the other room Dominic could make out a grey form lying on the floor. “Is it a previous victim?†He questioned himself. Right after his thought, he was thrown into a chair. The frost was still on his arm, the fear was still inside him, mentally paralysing him. His body grew limp in the chair while a rustling sound could be heard from the other room. After a couple clanks and clangs an unmasked and un-hooded figure stepped out from the darkness, holding a long, sharp needle. Inside the vial atop the needle was a dark blue, bubbling substance. Organisms could be seen crawling around inside the vial too, moving around. As the figure stepped up to Dominic, he shakily injected him with the fluid. Dominic lost control off everything. Emotions, actions, even life. “Throw him outside! You know he’s a filthy rat,†a voice boomed from the darkened room as the grey form stood up and walked the opposite direction from where Dominic lay unconscious. Loud, heavy footsteps were heard for quite some time. It stopped abruptly when a metal door clanked open and shut with loud squeaks. The brick door that opened to the alley way was thrown open and with a very sympathetic caution Dominic was put down on the street. The hooded figure stroked the wall until it ran its fingers across a brick that stood out. With care and consideration the figure pushed in the brick and the alley way opened out again, revealing the streets Dominic had previously roamed. Once the door behind them had shut the figure raised its hand slowly, and before removing the hood spoke softly, “I couldn’t stop them. I’m sorryâ€. The figure removed its hood to reveal long brown hair, flowing down from a young woman’s head. She dropped the cloak she was wearing and ran down the alley. Chapter 3; Discovery With raising his overly sore head to the wall behind him, Dominic groaned, when his eyes began to refocus he saw that he was in the alley once again. This time it was opened instead of blocked off. His neck ached with a pain like none you could imagine. With him trying to stagger back to his feet he heard the terrifying scream that brought him to the place he was. The moon above him shone bright on the condensation stricken street, revealing the arrows once again. This time the arrows pointed n a different direction. Some, even no direction at all, The city he was in, even though he didn’t know what city it was, was growing stranger as he progressed deeper into it. Dominic’s stroked his neck where the needle had been placed into hours before. After his hand had dropped back down to his waistline he broke out into a run. The screams grew surprisingly louder but in a less of a high pitch. He stopped in front of an alley where the now ever-repeating screams where coming from. Dominic took a double take over his shoulder before entering the dark and mysteriously dry alleyway. With stepping only a few times his foot hit the source of the noise. It wasn’t human. As he bent down to examine the system that was projecting the sound, the horrifying screaming stopped, as if it was turned off by body heat. Before he could stand up a movement behind him disturbed his confused state of mind putting him into a state of panic.

count me in! heres my story: (based on a true story) The Unexpected War (shorted version) Prologue It was war. All you could hear was the sound of gunshot. The smell of gun powder was the strongest sent for a mile radius. The feeling of death was in the air and the fear was very strong. If you ever watched a horror movie that was so disgusting, this was very similar. Many lives die when a war begins. Innocent lives including young men and women are killed at the cause of an argument. These lives will be forever remembered by all and will never be forgotten. War destroys families, friends, cities and entire regions. It is one of the cruelest things humans have being doing in their history. And why does this happen? Just for the sake of winning an argument? How can people choose killing innocent lives over talking things over human to human? The world would be many times greater if we could all just get along. Imagine the power of stopping a civil war in just a couple of words. Things like this would stop mass murders in the world and stop a lot of problems know today. All we can do is hope for that power to come and hope that the world realizes how dangerous this subject truly is. Chapter 1 On June the 7th 2006, Mathew’s family was packing for their trip to Lebanon. They had planed to go to Lebanon for Mathew’s aunts and uncle’s wedding. They had no concern of any real problems to occur while they were there. Lebanon had been safe for over a decade and most of Mathew’s family lives there. Lebanon it self is a beautiful country and its scenery is amazing. They were all looking forward to going to Lebanon and were very excited to do so. About one week before they went, Mathew was beginning to say goodbye to his friends, as he would not see them for about 3 months. He gave everyone hugs and said to email him for he’d have the privilege of going on the computer every once in a while when in Lebanon. “Oh Mathew, I’m going to miss you buddy!†said Connor, one of Mathews good friends. “Don’t worry Connor, I’ll be back soon enough and we can always talk through email,†as Mathew replied not knowing exactly what was in his close future. Day by day came closer to the departure of Mathew and his family, and Rupert, Mathew’s dad, was feeling sad, as he would not be coming right away with his family to Lebanon, he would have to wait about a month, as he had work to do. “Dad take care of my fish will you?†said Mathew with tears in his eyes. “Of course I will son, when you get back he’ll even be in a larger bowl†replied Rupert as he tried not to cry with his son. The day came and it was time for the Dahero family to go. Rosa (Mathew’s mom), Miranda (Mathew’s sister) and Malcome (Mathew’s little brother) were all saying goodbye to Thunder Bay as they would not see it in another 3 months. Chapter 2 “Mom, I’m scared!†said Miranda while looking out of the plane’s window. “Don’t worry were almost there,†replied Rosa, as she held her hand to give her comfort. The airplane ride was becoming a drag as it was about 12 hours of sitting down without any exercise. Mathew and Malcome were playing a game of chess, as the nice Lebanese flight attendant said, “Would you boys like something to drink?†“Yes please,†said the boys, “we are very thirsty.†The plane hit the ground, “thumpâ€, and it stopped. With mass force, everyone kind of went forward feeling the gravitational pull from landing. Finally the Dahero family made it to Lebanon. They got out and rushed to the airport terminal to meet their family awaiting them. “I can’t believe were actually here mom, I can’t wait to see Grandma,†said Malcome, “I don’t want to leave her again mom, I want to stay!†“Salam!!†Said grandma, in Arabic as the Dahero family ran in. Salam means welcome in the Arabic language. The Dahero family was so happy to see their friends and family after not being able to see them for the longest time. The smiles on the families faces were priceless, it was better then winning the lottery. Nothing in the world could have made them happier, but the worst thing would be to have to separate them. “Grandma, I’m not going to go back this time, I’m staying with you!†said Malcome with joy. Lebanon is situated beside the Mediterranean Sea, In between Syria and Israel. It had some political issues in the past with its neighboring countries, but all it wanted was peace for the entire country. Chapter 3 About a month later while walking to his uncle’s shop to reply to Connor’s message, Mathew had heard that 2 Israeli soldiers were kidnapped. The Dahero family all thought that the problem would be resolved quickly and nothing would happen as this type of problem had happened before. The next day, Israel had blown up the airport and every major link out of the country. The first thing Mathew thought was that he couldn’t leave with his family out of the country. They were stranded there fearing for their lives as there was nothing they could do. The next few days they heard bombs landing everywhere. Day and night, you could hear the sound of the bombs hit. BOOM then silence, and then they would pray that nothing was hit near them. Then BOOM! And silence again, and the worst part was it never stopped. After the next few days, the electricity poles were bombed and the electricity was cut off every 6-8 hours. They would have electricity for about 4 hours a day and basically the rest of the day they wouldn’t have anything. In worst case, the family would have to spend the night without electricity in the dark and bombs landing everywhere. The scary part was that the house was right beside a huge bridge and they were scared to death just thinking that it would get targeted. Chapter 4 July 18th, 2006, it was the date of Mathew’s birthday. After the long days of sheltering for their lives, and trying to call for help from the Canadian Embassy, Mathew had tried to enjoy a cake. While in the dark, with no electricity, no water running, bombs dropping, airplanes flying from above, all they could do was sing happy birthday with fear in their voices. What were they going to do? Their only hope was to leave. The Canadian embassy finally called saying they could take only the ones with Canadian Passports, and they were going to export them to Cyprus. The worst thing that could happen to this family was to be torn apart. Only the ones who came from Thunder Bay could leave. The aunts, uncles, cousins, grandpa’s and of course, grandma all would have to stay. “NO! Mom I can’t leave grandma here! Please let us take her.†Said Malcome attached to his grandma while crying. “We can’t honey†replied Rosa sobbing with tears. Now Mathew’s dad was supposed to come about a week after the airport was blown up. During this huge commotion, he was in Thunder Bay doing all the things he could to help them get out of the country. Finally after hard work, the Dahero family fled the country. They had got to Cyprus as it was the export place the Canadian Embassy had brought them. There Mathew had tried to help out as much as he could. He could speak 3 languages fluently and thought maybe he could be useful. So he helped out as much as he could. Chapter 5 The plane landed, the Dahero family was finally reunited with Rupert along with many other friends from Thunder Bay. They hugged for hours, in doubt that they were finally safe and away from the war, but in so much pain of leaving their friends and family behind. Today Malcome reflect on what happened and he always remembers the hardest part of leaving his friends and other family in Lebanon behind. No one from the family was hurt in the war, but that was much luck, many other families were killed, and the ones who didn’t, have their homes destroyed. Today Mathew will always say that democracy brings peace but war does not. And he is now thankful for being back in Canada with his loved ones with him. Peace has no color. (English) Peace has no language barrier. (English) La paix est notre droit. (French) El salam Hakouna. (Arabic) Peace is our right. (English)
