Discuss whether he was the greatest Olympian of all time, or his journey. I personally think he just got lucky, I mean .01 seconds? Mark Spitz demolished his competition, Michael Phelps just beat them.

Well, his last race when he won by .01 seconds...that was really close. SO close that it looked like Cavic touched the wall first. But it was that close, it was really hard to tell.

He worked hard to achieve all those golds.
He broke the records and only was 1 close race.
    Gotta say, Great job overall.

Then again did Mark Spitz really have competition? I think not.

lol i'd say if you were competing in the olympics you had to have at least some competition XD but i wouldn't go as far and say he's the best olympian but i would go to say the best all around swimmer that history has seen. I wouldn't say olympian because he didn't medal in every single event for every single sport XD only swimming.

BTW my spellcheck for ff thinks olympics isnt a real word XD

    he is a good swimmer
but swimming is the only event where its possible to win that many gold medals
    so he isnt that great.

    btw ceneret, olympics isn't a word, its a capital O :)
    Olympics ftw :D

His win was superb, especially the one he broke world record by 4 secs (or was it?), it was truly phenomenal.

That was a relay, and also another fact to consider was that the only reason Spitz didn't win an 8th gold medal was because there are more races available now.

    XD excuse my capitalising XD

but also you can get that many medals if you do sprinting in track, there's like 8 different sprinting events including relays at just the highschool level and there's like 3 more that the Olympics adds so apparently you can only be the best Olympian if you swim or sprint in track XD but if you sprint you don't usually do more than 4 events... so that only leaves swimming XD

He didn't just get lucky. Swimming is one of those sports where you have to be good to win, not just be "lucky". If you look at sports like gymnastics where no matter how good you are, there is very little room for error. One fall in gymnastics is practically a one-way ticket off of the podium. That doesn't happen (not nearly as often) in sports like swimming, track+field, etc.

Chilly, swimming is the only sport where people bother to go outside of their speciality.
Take running for example. You hardly see a 200m runner then go an compete in javelin or discus.

Swimming on the other hand there are 4 strokes, each completely different. In essence its like 4 different track events.

I give kudos to Phelps, he is a machine and the worlds best athelete.

Decathlon etc. participants are pretty much the same, kudos to them.

and on another note, if Rebecca Adlington doesn't get a "Dame" like Kelly Holmes did I will be very annoyed.

    Haha, that was good :p

Nah, the reason Phelps is so much better than the rest is because he produces little to no lactic acid.

Lol. Getting lucky is winning the 200 medley by over 2 seconds? I think not.
