I'm not sure if this belongs in Sports or Debate It! but is anyone else really pissed off by the NBC Olympics Gymnastics commentators? They are extremely biased and all they want is good television (i.e. they create drama and make us believe that there is actually drama going on.) Especially with Nastia and that Chinese girl's "controversial tie" with the uneven bars yesterday.. that was completely ridiculous! Nastia should be fully aware of the rules of a competition she has been training for, so it's no surprise that in the event of a tie, she should know how the gold and silver are decided. Tim (the main commentator guy) repeated so many times throughout that broadcast that Nastia's routine was sooo much better and that the Chinese didn't deserve it blah blah blah. So ridiculous.

Yep, I agree. Though I can't really blame them. First, they're Americans in the US, so its perfectly fine to show some national pride. Secondly, they're in a business where the audience is the American people. The more you praise the "home team" the happier the viewers are.

In some cases I agree with the commentators though. Although I'm rooting for the Chinese team, I think the judges scored too high on some of the routines. The tie-breaking procedure is also a bit whack.

The commentators are US, so of course they are going to be biased, if they were rooting for China people might not want to watch it anymore and they'd probably get fired...it would be interesting to see what a neutral country with not so many medals/athletes competing, like Canada or Mexico.

Just look at the judges' scores. They're relatively unbiased.

I must agree with that, they do seem to be giving them chinese girls high scores for those olympics...they have a great olympic gymnastic team it's just so controversial, age + judges....sort of like the asterisk deal with Bonds.

True, but if you can tell that the scores are a bit high, then you can just judge for yourself how well the athletes performed ;)
I enjoy looking at the routines, coming up with my own score for them, and comparing it with how the judges score. I pride myself in that I'm usually pretty close :p

Um............................... The women don't do rings or pommel horse [...]
Women: Vault, balance beam, uneven bars, floor exercise
Men: Vault, pommel horse, high bar, parallel bars, rings, floor exercise

I like watching both, but for different reasons. Women is more graceful and aesthetically pleasing whereas men is more high-flying and acrobatic. Its really amazing how they can do all those skills. Even something as basic as a handstand is actually very difficult to perform, let along on bars/rings/etc.

the U.S. commentators may be biased toward American athletes, but so are many other countries. The Chinese commentators probably bias the Chinese because they need to satisfy to the people of China, and the best way to satisfy any country-wide group of people is to tell them what they want to hear.
