Which is more important, number of golds or total number of medals?
Most international sites think its number of golds whereas most US Olympic sites think its total number of medals. Weird huh? :p

EDIT: or choose point-based scoring, see Arash's post below

Neither a point based system would represent both sides of the equation equally.

    Thus,

    3 Points- Gold USA: 220
    2 Points- Silver China: 223
    1 Point- Bronze

I don't really care who has the most golds/medals.

I just enjoy watching the sports like Swimming, Gymnastics, and Track

Of course, the sports comes first. But medals are tokens of national dominance in sports. Its not just athletes and teams competing, the Olympics are also about countries competing.

I go by the point scoring.
And I hope China wins the race. It would mean a lot more to them than to the US.

Yes, true - and I would go by the point scoring because going solely by golds isn't really fair.

    Since say if...
    China gets gold
    US gets silver and bronze

And the US doesn't get anything but the china gets a point for gold - not very fair :nope:

I voted gold medals...I'd rather be the BEST in the world than second best in a couple more events. ;)

    Golds count the most.
Congrats to China for having the most.
USA has overall the most number of medals and is on top as well.

This debate can go on for a while if we have 2 candidates withe one supporting the max number and the other saying it's all about the gold.

Arash, although it doesn't represent equally as stated, I believe your "point" system to be the most effective answer to this question, as it addresses both statement's in a rational manner. By this logic, 2 golds = 3 silvers, which I would agree on at around 80%. I have never thought of this question, nor rationalized it to a point system. Thanks for the post. :p

Edit: Just so I'm completely sure, did Zer0 or Arash think of the point-system..? I noticed Zer0's post was edited to involve a point-system Arash posted, however, I'm uninformed as to who to thank for this semi-complex thought. Btw, great topic Zer0. :p
