This thread is one that I would actually like the members to discuss with their own opinions, as I would like to refine my view on it myself. As I will rule the world one day, I want to hear your ideas on power.

Does power really corrupt? Does one have to take responsibility of power?

I've always wondered.. If one person dictating a whole country would work? Is removing the rights of many worth their salvation? ( I know its hard, but can we please try and not get political or start pulling out old history books of past governments. I really dont care for that crap. So keep the arguments fresh and not too indepth with past rulers etc)

Do you think one person can, neigh - should have that much power? Like the single seat of the american president can make or break the entire world.

Should power be given to a single person?

I know a general discussion on the nature of power is pretty vague, but I would like to develope my understanding and see where this goes.

It could have high marks, but the thing is, if you have Absoulute power, You could be making a foolish desicion, then go and just do it.
But if you were on your own, You could just do whatever you want. And Yeah, than definatly could be a problem, if you use it the wrong way.
And I know you said no history book stuff, but look at Napolean Bonaparte. He pulled france out of the biggest slum any country was in. And for the most part, he used total power in a great way

Humans are naturally corrupt, and 99%, people will abuse power given to them if they can get away with it. That's why we have the checks and balances system, so that one person or a group of people can't have complete control over something. It's just the way humans are.

I think one person shouldn't have all the power. Because in that one person a lot of people are forced to adopt their policies and beliefs. Plus look what happened to Hitler he was a one man power and he ended up getting shot! That's eventually what would happen to anybody with that much power.

I think the problem isn't power itself, but the person's personality. Arrogance and Cockyness(SP
?) will lead the person to become corrupt. So it's just a matter of being able to stay humble? if that makes sense

Power doesn't necessarily corrupt, it's just a tool to use in the PROCESS of corruption. You could be corrupt loooonngggg before you have power. It is WITH power that you are able to carry out your desires =]

Mankind is constantly looking for improvements and advancements, because of this having a ruler over an entire nation or the world would be practically impossible. The responsibility itself would be too great to bear, let alone the thought of corruption. Our era has gone past the age of rulers afterall, in the past a nation would have been happy with a wise and decent ruler because back then their ambitions were to simply live and lead a simple life. If we were to have a ruler over all of us now, we would obviously doubt his or her authority and mark him down over any single flaw he or she makes immediately.

Power will always corrupt someone eventually. I am not going to give numerous examples- but heres one from America's history. Why do you think that presidents can't stay the presidents for more than 2 terms? Because they would eventually get corrupt and screw the USA... Cough cough water gate cough cough.
