I read an article in the paper a couple of days ago that really got me thinking. An American woman signed up to serve in Iraq thinking that she would be doing some good. Soon after she got there, she grew sick of the massacre and when on a 2 week leave she fled to Canada. Now the Canadian government is telling her that she must leave the country or she will be deported. I am a Canadian and personally I am appauled that our government would do this, but my guess is that our government is afraid of what America would do if we defended her. Just for the record I don't support the "war on terror" or whatever it is that they're calling it nowadays, the sooner everyone goes back home the better. What do you guys think of all this?

    Sounds like an interesting article.

But the American Military probably think she is POWMIA(Prisoner of War/Missing In Action)...so now her family is probably also mad...since they don't know she fled. I wonder how she made it from the Middle East to Canada.

But if she really wants to leave, she can be dishonorably discharged from the service.

Says that she was on two weeks leave, so I'm guessing that means she was in the states when she decided to flee. She brought her family with her. It was apparently back in Jan 2007 that she came here, so it's been two years. I don't know much about the rules and punishments but it says she faces prospect of jail for desertion. Then again don't believe everything you read, I'm just saying IF it's all true. It just caught my attention when I was flipping through to get to the crossword/sudoku page :p

There was a similar case couple months ago. The soldier in question fled to Canada and was pretty vocal about his views and the war. Then recently he was forced to go back to the states where he got court martialed. There was a lot of controversy surrounding it at that time and a lot of people signed petitions for the government to allow him to stay, but it didn't help him none. I'm guessing same will happen for this woman. It is very unfortunate.

I suppose there could always be better ways to quit participating in the war, I mean it is not very responsible to just leave for another country. If every single soldier does that then the army wouldn't be disciplined at all, and that is definitely a deficit to the morale of the nation. In this case I feel that the Canadian government isn't supporting either side (nor are they afraid of America for that matter), it's just that they are doing what is right.

    First of all...

People should maby THINK before they join the military, Especially in times of war...

and i think any country would deport an illeagal immagrant which is what she is afte all.

And when you join the military and flee, well thats a HUGE deal and you are in lots of trouble. You pretty much belong to them.

She would have been better off gtting caught making out with another chick and get out of the military that way.

I think canada did right by telling her to go back, why should they want any trouble with the US over some one who is breaking the law.

    HAHA, QFT.

People tend to have sympathy for them. But the truth is she didn't make the smartest decision going AWOL. Her best bet would've been staying low. Claiming refugee status in these circumstances are asking for trouble.

I was just about to say "Why doesn't she just tell them she's a lesbian?"

Though apparently because nobody wants to fight any more, the states are getting rid of the "don't ask, don't tell" policy and opting for a "We want everyone!" policy.

Since she is considered AWOL (absence without leave) or a deserter, which is considered a federal crime. The U.S. government probably issued a warrant for her arrest, and now the Canadian government has to deport her back to the US. They may not want to, but because of the Extradition treaty between the two countries, Canada has to send an American "criminal" back to the U.S. Sucks, yeah? This "war" in Iraq is not cool. I do not support it either. :nope:
