[GUIDE] Changing your IP address (Windows)

NOTE: for dynamic IP's. Static IP's require your service provider to change it - and, as herches said, you need a good reason.

The simplest method for a change of IP address is to quickly turn off (or unplug the power of) your Cable/DSL modem for around five minutes. This will generally change your IP. If that doesn't work, try it again for 8 hours or try some of the other ideas below.

If it's connected through a router, you can plug the cable straight from the modem into the computer instead. This hustles up some security crap with Windows though, which can result in a change of IP.

Here's the easiest way IMO:

Step 1: (Vista - XP is similar)
Go into start and search for cmd (on XP you go into run and type cmd).
Right click it and go run as Administrator and then click continue.

Step 2:

Type in ' ipconfig /release '

Step 3:

Type in ' ipconfig /renew '

Done.


An alternate way of doing this with Vista is performing up to Step 2, and then trying to use Internet Explorer (it shouldn't be able to connect to the internet). There will be a link there saying 'let Windows find a solution to this problem', and you click that. A box will come up with three remedies, you want the first: Windows will change your IP settings.

If none of this works, call your service provider or something. LOL.

 

This only works for dynamic IP's. This may work for some static IP's, but most of the time, you have to call your ISP to get your static IP changed. Also, you need a good reason. My reason of "I got banned from neopets" wasn't good enough a couple months ago. xD

Decent guide I guess though, just add in that that's for dynamic IP's though, and you'll be set.

I'm pretty sure the majority of people on neofriends, or at least the ones who get IP banned and want to know how to change their IP (like Fexxel ) use a dynamic IP.

And yeah, you do need a good reason XD
A decent one would probably be 'someone is cyberstalking me and I want it to be untraceable' or something along those lines.

 

Question: How do you know what kind of IP you have? I thought statics randomly change on their own, or when you unplug the router.. but seeing what this says, it might be the opposite?

Doing the ipconfig thing doesn't change your IP. Strong misconception.

So in a computer network, there are two different IP addresses. One is used by other computers (over the internet) to identify your network. This IP address is what web servers (like Neopets) see when you connect with them. However, within your little network, the router must be able to identify to which computer it must forward the information. This is a local IP address assigned every time you turn on your computer (its usually: 192.168.1.x). But aside from just turning on your computer, you can force the router to re-assign a local IP address using ipconfig.

Basically, the web server never sees your local IP address. It is only used by the network to uniquely identify each computer within the network.

 

Changing IP doesn't really help a lot if I'm not wrong. Most changes only affect the last few numbers of your IP, but usually the first 3 numbers stays the same, so it doesn't exactly change your entire IP address.

 

But neopets consider it as different ip i suppose....Because if you are frozen on one ip it doesnt chain ice all the other because they are of same network..

Even rapidshare used to allow downloads for dynamic ip's till now!You can download a file and restart the router to download another file!

can you define static and dynamic ip's for me please :/ i dont know which is which and what they are.

 

Static, it´s alwayys the same IP.
Never changes.
for example, now your IP is 1:25:15
tomorow, next week, next month will be 1:25:15.

Dinamic changes.
Now is 2:50:10.
If you reset your internet, will change.
will be another number.

PS.: this numbers are just examples.

 

Well they kinda do that. Thats why some sisters or brothers of a neopets hacker aren't able to access neopets because the entire network has been blocked.

 

I have a dynamic IP, and NONE of these methods worked to change it. I swear, I've tried like everything, and nothing's working. I don't know where else to turn to... but maybe you guys could help me out a bit. Let me provide a bit of information:

There's 3 computers in this house, 1 of those being a mac. There's also a laptop, which is occasionally used. I think that one has a wireless connection of it's own though, I'm not sure.

So, the router and modem are actually right next to my computer. The most I've ever been able to unplug the router for was about 10 minutes, when nobody was on a computer... Other than that, there's always someone on the computer and I can't really disconnect it for that long. That didn't change my IP...

I tried the ipconfig renew thing, and ended up with the same IP in the end =/ Would that maybe be because there are other computers on the internet that are sharing the same network as me, at the same time that I tried to renew my IP?

Oh, and I have Road Runner high speed internet.

 

if i do this, would my internet be disconnected or still the same?
