The reason I say no is because I live in california where medicinal is legal, and I already know so many people who just abuse it lol. There is no one it could be good on a wider scale lol

Due to the illegal importation of mass quantities of Marijuana, and other illegal drugs, countries such as Mexico, Columbia, and other South American countries suffer from widespread violence, and corruption. This is all due to the sheer demand for drugs by Americans and would cease to exist if Marijuana and/or other/all drugs were legalized.

Marijuana kills thousands per year, just not in the way you might think.

I also live in California, and I say legalize it and tax the hell out of it. I think if we legalized it it'd be a huge stimulant for our economy (which is completely failing as of now) and it isn't any more harmful than alcohol. Legalize it, tax it, and put the same regulations on it that we have on alcohol and be done with it.

Nice point but that and the medical problem is the only advantages I have to agree so far on this debate. Even if you legalize it, the corruption or the violence won't stop. The drugs are only activating some part of the human nature and everybody knows you can't change human nature. XD

I'm a bit of a fence sitter when it comes to this question, there are obvious costs and benefits for both sides of the argument.

Where I'm from, in one state its legal to grow your own for personal consumption (with a limit of 1 plant per head i think) but not to deal.

As many other users said before me, legalizing it on a larger scale would be beneficial for the economy but may have some negative impact on certain individuals; so it really depends on what the desired outcome is.

I dont personally smoke, but I do go to a "liberal arts" college where a majority of the student body smokes. I can see the benefits to legalizing it; I also think that in the US if the feds and the state were to tax marijuana they would make so much money.

However, it seems as if the current laws on medical marijuana are a little lax. I have a few friends who have a card and it only cost them $90 to get it from a doctor at the medical marijuana shop...and there is absolutely nothing wrong with them.

If it is going to be legalized it either needs to be strictly limited so that only people who really need it can use it or it needs to be completely available to everyone.

It also seems as if states are beginning to legalize it (CA and CO for example), but it is still technically illegal as far as the feds are concerned, which makes the entire situation more difficult.

Ok bear with me here. According to your OWN logic cannabis SHOULD be legalized.

The corruption and violence is caused by the ILLEGALITY of marijuana(greed)
    You can't change human nature
    human nature desires drugs
Our government is de facto promoting corruption and violence in nearby countries by keeping marijuana illegal.

I think they should legalize it :/ I mean, it's sort of like prohibition in the early 1900's. you can't really stop people from doing it. so you might as well legalize it and make it taxable. :p

    not sort of, exactly.

States are working to legalize it as we speak.

So far theres like 14 states that have legalized it for medicinal purposes, more and more are working to get similar laws on the books.

Personally, I think they should just go ahead and legalize it.

Just think of all the money the government would save each year, just from the people they wouldnt have to send to jail for possession of pot.
Besides that, no matter how long its illegal, there will ALWAYS be those who do it regardless, so they arent really accomplishing anything.

Personally, I believe it should be legalized. Anything you do can be harmful to your body if you do it excessively. Take drinking water for example; if you sat there and drank water nonstop, your body would eventually quit processing it and you would basically drown yourself internally. I read an article on MSN where that happened to a girl though I do not have a link to it anymore sorry :(. Also, I am fighting for disability due to degenerative discs in my back. If my state legalized marijuana, I could smoke that and save my liver from the chemicals in the pills I am forced to take to function with the pain daily. So yes, legalize marijuana, it would do more good than evil I think.

It's going to be another driving drunk issue if it's legalized. Someone in my speech class just gave a persuasive speech on why not to legalize marijuana. I wish I would've remembered more of what he said! lol.
The only good thing is that U.S. can tax it and get out of some debt.
Personally, I don't like weed. I made my girlfriend stop smoking. I don't care if anyone else smokes though.
I never tried it yet and I'm 19.

I honestly think the economy would be better with marijuana legalized, more than 25% of the population actively partakes in smoking, and for thoes who criticize marijuana take a look at this

ANNUAL AMERICAN DEATHS CAUSED BY DRUGS

    TOBACCO ........................ 400,000
    ALCOHOL ........................ 100,000
    ALL LEGAL DRUGS .............20,000
    ALL ILLEGAL DRUGS ..........15,000
    CAFFEINE .........................2,000
    ASPIRIN ...........................500
    MARIJUANA ...................... 0

I wouldn't want it to be legalized although i do smoke it, i've had the best times smoking it in random places purely because you can't just smoke it anywhere :)

I just sat in on a meeting with City officials in my town (I'm an intern and was there with my boss) and one of their focus topics was legal marijuana. I live in Colorado, so (semi)legal marijuana has become very common recently. The town is pretty conservative and the way that they were talking was hilarious to me. I won't repeat what they said, but every last one of them was in a tizzy over its spreading use.

I think it would be smart to legalize and tax the heck out of it. If there were the proper regulations, I bet it could work.

Weed is provided by god, booze is provided by man. Who are you going to trust? Although I have puffed a joint on occasion, Like 1 or 2 a year, I do know people who are chronic smokers. They live life and enjoy themselves for the most part. I have never met an asshole because he smoked weed, but add booze and its instant. Smoke weed till it comes out your ass, who cares. Puff, Puff, Pass.

Well yes, Marijuana should be legalized, but it won't be. If it was legalized, it would be taxed, but they wouldn't make much money off of it because people would grow it themselves, and still buy within the community. The Government realizes this - that they wouldn't have control over it.. and the government hates not having control..
