Do you think Leo is crazy or not?

I thought that he was, after seeing the movie. Still, when i looked it up on internet, people's arguments convinced me that he wasn't crazy.

What about you? What do you think about it?

I watched a low quality version of this movie and I didn't catch what he said at the very end before they took him away, so I can't say for sure. My guess is that little line in the movie was fairly important. Based on what happened to him though, I can say that I think they could have convinced anyone they were crazy so it's hard to tell either way.

I believe that he was effectively cured by the experimental therapy, but in the end chose rather to "die as a good man, than live as a monster." Which is why he continued pretending to be dillusional; in order to receive the lobotomy.

I believe that he convinced himself he was sane and in doing so solidified the fact that he wasn't.

actually if he convince himself that he's sane, i think the only one that will think he is is him. therefore, could we really say that he solidified the fact that he isnt crazy at all? :\ I dont know :|

I'd need to think about this :tehe:

my apologies. I should have finished the sentence ... it should have ended .. the fact that he wasn't sane .. not the fact that he wasnt crazy lol .. it was assumption on my part that it was understood :) sorry.

yess! at last, someone who is as confused as me.

both sides were equally convincing, in saying whether leo was crazy or not. but i'm leaning towards the part where he is crazy, cause he definitely was crazy at first, but i feel that the ending of the movie was (deliberately?) unclear about it.

kinda not too satisfied with the last scene though.

When i saw this, i went with 3 other people, and i was the only one who didnt catch on that he "might" be insane. It was SUCH a good movie, it really was. After it was pointed out to me though, however, i thought of the possibillity, but I didnt want to think of him as insane.

After reading the Yahoo Forum debate, I came to my own conclusion.. I think he was either completely brainwashed into thinking he was insane, or they actually did drive him mad and the final scene "finished him off".

You got me thinking about the movie, i want to watch it again.

To make a more clear perspective; there is a saying.

When you can honestly sit there and say, "I am perfectly sane, nothing is wrong with me." or some variation thereof then you inevitably prove to those around you that you are indeed not sane, or at the very least that there is something psychologically wrong with you. :)

at the ending of shutter island when he says "rather die as a hero or live as a monster" does that mean he actually remembers everything still but pretends not to or he actually forgot it all?In the end, he remembers fully what he has done. He fakes a delusional relapse because he no longer can live with the agony and pain of realizing he is the true killer, therefore he decides to become lobotomized so he doesn’t live as a monster

That's what I think was the underlying meaning.

Another way to go about is that he had been faking to be remembering his past from the start (i.e. the doctor is lying to him) and he wanted to get out of danger's way, but in the end he decided he can't live with the fact that he is being monitored, etc and just decides to let them kill him. I think the former one makes more sense though.
