Hi guys, thought i'd make a new topic about the hot issue in my own neighbourhood. I live in Australia in the blue mountains and local developers want to build a crematorium in a residential area. This has caused massive upheaval in the community because the smoke stack will be less than 40m away from residential areas (homes etc.)

I personally disagree with the developers and think the whole idea should be sacked because of the smokestack.

Let me know what ya think-

    Crematorium- yae or nae?

Well what effects will the smoke have? Will there be any damage caused? Cleaning bills caused by ash residue?

Or is it because it's creepy.

Nae. The thought of breathing in a dead persons ashes is very, very disturbing.

I'd have to vote no on this one.
Growing up we had one near our house and it was just creepy.
Hopefully they dont follow through with their plans.

I don't really understand why this is creepy. Though I'm not very familiar with how bodies are cremated, I was under the impressions that the "ashes" are actually just bone fragments that are left over from the burning and then ground into a powder like substance somewhat resembling ash. These are left over after the cremation, and you certainly aren't going to be breathing in these fragments since they are way too large (before they are ground up) to become airborn. And organs and tissue are vaporized by the heat. The only "ash" I could imagine you breathing in would be ash from the coffin or whatever container the body was contained in while burning.

That's pretty crazy about the diamond deal. Are there places that offer the service?

Just knowing that people are taking bodies nearby and burning them kinda creeps me out. Just doesn't seem right either, bodies aren't meant to be burned.

And why is that? Cremation is more efficient and probably cheaper. As the world's population grows, we are going to face a shortage of burial land, a problem already being experienced by many large cities.

Maybe the developer should build the crematorium a little far from the community because of the air. But I think the building of crematorium is needed, cause I would really prefer to be cremate than buried. Just the thought of my dead body rotten slowly under the earth is suffocating.. XD And after a few decades or maybe a century, no one I know will be there to clean up my tomb anymore. :tehe:

I would say since it's more cost-efficient, that crematoriums are better than the orthodox funeral places

Nae due to the fact that I am afraid of zombies. and also I heard that smoking peoples ashes is like smoking 5 packs of cigs.

I'd say nae. Just seeing the smoke in the distance and knowing that it is burning dead bodies grosses me out. I don't even like the cemetery a few blocks away from my house :(
They should just move a little farther away from town and save a lot of trouble.

I'd definitely say Nae, as i grew up with a crematorium quite closely and it really just was weird and creepy to be around with. It was really disturbing sometimes when we saw all the smoke and fumes in the distance.

Yae. Cheaper, and that's great for families who can't afford a coffin, tombstone, etc.

I want to be cremated when I'm older because I wouldn't want worms and the like nibbling at my rotting flesh. It grosses me out to think of that. But they should at least move the crematorium a little farther away.

I'm not so much grossed out as I would be worried about possible health effects. But I doubt there will be something like black smoke and visible. If anything, it would be colourless smoke, same type you see in factories.

I'd vote nay as well because of pollution and health effects. Also it'll probably decrease property values :p
