Looking through the forum topics I was enlightened to find a board for topics of Media. I feel that the Media has corrupted me so much in terms of sexual exposition, vulgarity, and work ethic. Sitting on my butt in front of my TV has transformed my habits for the worse. So I would like to dedicate this post to the question: How much has the media changed you?

Well, I left my comp for days to download any tv series or movies I like. For now, I'm waiting to download the newest episode of Bleach, Naruto, Death Note, One Piece & many many more. The waiting is killing me slowly.............

INternet is really the only media that I have regular access to anymore. If anything, I think it makes me less lazy because it's only entertaining for maybe an hour or two at a time.

I think that anyone who says it hasn't had much of an impact on them is very, very wrong. These people are saying that if we had no forms of media - no newspapers, magazines, tv, MUSIC (yes, music is a type of media), internet, etc - then they would still be the same person that they are now. No way do I accept that, even for a second.

One cause to my and my friend's eating disorder might've been an overdose of skinny anime girls and dieting commercials at young age -_- I guess media has made me more open-minded when it comes to ethnicity, sexual orientation, etc.

I think there's a difference between an eating disorder and teenagers just thinking it would be great to lose some weight and look like a celebrity. An eating disorder is a psychological illness that someone battles with for the rest of their life. Not just a fad that they go through with some other kids at school or whatever.

However, I definitely can see your point about the media encouraging that kind of attitude and self-hatred amongst vulnerable people. However, I will just point out that researchers believe that the first case of bulimia was in the 1300's (St Catherine of Siena) and from as early as the year 383 AD there are recorded cases of people starving themselves to death. It's easy to assume that eating disorders are a modern problem, but the fact is that it could only seem that way as we pay more attention to these things now. In the past, nothing was known about many diseases so they may not have been recorded.

    I'm sorry. I study psychology :/

Good point there. But I never mentioned media was them MAIN cause of my bad habits, eating disorders are only one way to handle negative feelings, depression, self-hatred and so on. I was bullied because of my looks for almost 6 years so I had a low confidence and a depression. I also wanted the bullying to stop so I tried to fix the faults in my appearance. That's how I ended up with the idea that I would have to look like my idols in anime series, with impossibly long legs and a nonexcistant waist. THEN I'd be left in peace and everything would be fine. Oh how stupid I was @_@

The dream of a perfect body is tempting and media is all the time feeding us with new diet pills, methods, celeb rumours and glamorous pictures of skinny models looking carefree and happy. With some encouragement/nasty comments/pressure from your environment it's not hard to make dieting a dangerous habit.

I think that the current American society has a skewed interpretation of what beauty is. There is too much idealization of the figure by idols who look like angels although they are not so internally. It is not natural for humans to starve or overindulge themselves, so the current media must be very unnatural as well.

The media has made me aware of things that Ive never realized before hearing/watching about them. If it wasn't for the media I wouldn't know about news around the world so it has made me grateful...

    I dunno what im saying
