yes, just look at all the large cities, they only have space to build up...we're running out of places to live, we're using our resouces quicker than they can be remade, down in the tropics, thousands of acres of tropical forests are getting run down to make room for live room. some people think we'll die in thousands of years when the sun burns out, but what will really kill us is a war over resouces, there will be many wars in the future over water and land and animals

i dont know how it got so large, but just think about the number of parents that can have 1 child, if theres 1,316,000,000people and atleast half of them are adults and have a child your population will still go up very fast...the population of india is also very high, its close to china's it is 1,123,000,000...heres a link for you, just something to think about

    http://www.census.gov/ipc/www/popclockworld.html

go there and look at the number, wait 10 seconds and then refresh the page and look at the number again

It's because that law was only recently put into place, so there were previously families having lots of kids. China recognized the problem and put a law into place to take care of it.

In most places I don't think we are overpopulated, I just think that the population we have needs to be more spread out. If you look at the united states, we still have a LOT of land that is more or less undeveloped and uninhabited, but people choose to live in cities because it's easier to go where things are already developed for you.

And people always say that we're going to use up our resources in X amount of years, but they always fail to take into account that as technology advances we will use less and less resources per person. Not to mention that many resources are renewable, and we just aren't taking the time yet to reuse them.

I do think the world is becoming over populated. My small village how now become an ever increasing town. :(

However my problem isnt so much with over population but that the world is so small these days, that it takes 24 hours to get as far as Australia, when decades ago it would have taken weeks. That makes me sad because it feels like less of an adventure

that's not always true, like car technology, u have bigger, faster, better cars but they use more gasoline

i read that the law china put into effect if they didnt put it into effect right now their population would be 400,000,000 larger than it is

yeah our population may be growing everyday, but I believe that the world is far from being overpopulated, and we are far from exhausting our resources. People all too often think of only our land, and not our waters... people have plenty of space to expand to in our worlds oceans... it's just a matter of tapping those resources when the time comes.

I didn't say expand on.... I said expand in, and I mean the possibility of underwater cities. The vastness of our land is nothing compared to the vastness of our oceans

The world can cope with 12billion people with the CURRENT techonology and research we have. With the improvements we will make within the time we get to 12billion we can support more than that. Most MEDC's are starting to get to stage 5 on the demographic transition graph and their population is starting to stable/decrease.

Most LEDC's are starting to progress through the stages and will "eventually" make it to level 5.

Asin for china it's predicted there population will steady at around 900million people and they will have enough $$ to support all these and live a good quality of life.

I reckon we can easily copy with DOUBLE our current population so nah we're not overpopulated

Yep I agree with everyone else, we're reaching our carrying capacity!! Lets goto mars!!! lol In my ap bio book there is a graph, and it shows the human population growth and it's like straight --------- then theres a little tiny dent downwards where the bubonic plague was for around 50ish years like V then there's right after that the thing just skyrockets like crazy sorta like this

    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX|
    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX|
    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX|
    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX|
    --------------------------------------------------------V|

X is just empty space, i'm using a filler or it doesn't work right, but you see how it just shoots up within 100 years insanely.
and it goes super high, crazy humans -.- problems is I think someone else mentioned, 2 people have 2 babies, they have 2 babies and their children have 2 and 2 and we keep exponentially growing until it's mass chaos. But the cool thing is, there's still more prokaryotes on our face than humans in the whole world =P go prokaryotes!

I think we are definately overpopulating this planet...

I was reading a few years ago that eventually all the land areas would be used up if people continued being buried instead of cremated.

Cremation is more popular today than back then, hence the problem has been delayed.

My major concern tho is twofold. Imagine a planet of 20 Billiion. Can everyone have a job... and more problematic... can we feed all those mouths.

I won't even get into everyone owning a car... It doesn't look good.

    -just my two cents-

I think that the more advanced countries are becoming more and more overpopulated unnecessarily, when if they thought about it, they could go to these 3rd world countries with no money and AIDs and such like, and develop them, give the people an education and teach them the skills to become self sufficient, instead of spending money on ways of killing people.

Sure, many people won't like it, but it beats most of their population dying of AIDs, lack of healthcare and starvation.

We certainly have to technology to think about ways we can make these countries workable, eventually leaving them alone with the skills to survive, especially the skills to pass the skills on to the next generation!

Yes, it's a fact, not an opinion that world is overpopulated :?
And it will be more and more! Countries in growth, like China, India, and Central and South America are the most overpopulated. They are in need of manpower, but in this way, with non-controlled industrialization, it would be a big problem for the world. This countries in fact, with USA and others, didn't have signed the Kyoto Protocol, so overpopulation is becoming synonimous of poverty, social bad conditions, and general smog.
Maybe in the future China and India will be the most powerful countries of the world, but can we survive without laws that control their activity?

I think that all the world must opens the eyes and practice a sustainable development!

CO2 isn't the major problem... 'cause it can be recycle by plants. (And we mustn't eliminate them)
I think that one of the worst emissions, because of its toxicity, is CO (carbon monoxide) from fuel combustion. Such the industrialization I've nominated before. It cause also the growth of greenhouse effect. :(

You know, 70% of the earth is never been visited by humans. I mean, in the sea and that kind of things we can build :D And otherwise we just go live on Mars :p

Yes, in fact before I speaked about sustainable development, that consist also in a correct use of the ground... but maybe it's only an utopia, 'cause in the world the only thing that rule are the money :x

And... don't you understand what I've said, or you don't understand what is greenhouse effect?^^" Ozone layer... don't you have ever heard about?.?

I believe it is starting to correct itself a bit, since many women are waiting until after they've established a career and a comfortable lifestyle to have children. So by the time they're ready to settle down, they can only have one or two.

And it isn't as popular to have many children now. In comparison to a new decades ago when having ten children was still pretty common, we are getting better.

I personally think two children for any family is enough... Replace yourself if you must.... and then stop having them.
