Does anybody have anything to say about this match? From what I've heard, it's actually supposed to be really good considering the squad Bradley has picked for the match... ...and for those of you interested in watching, it's on ESPN2 in 10 minutes...
USA: 2-0 :Mexico (Conrad 53, Donovan 90) - N/A Congratulations to the USA men's national team and to interim head coach, Bob Bradley on their win over their south-of-the-border rivals, Mexico! Overall, I though the match was terrific! Mexico fielded a nearly a full squad of their top players, while the United States was missing a number of players considered regulars to the national squad. That aside, I felt that Mexico did play better most of the match and had far more chances that should have been converted, but their poor finishing failed them. Meanwhile, the United States played a great possession game and really went after the Mexicans. I personally was pleased to see that Landon Donovan was not the captain of the USA squad, as he failed to prove he had the ability to lead the team during the World Cup, where he seemed to be absent most of the competition. I think that it was because of that, that Donovan decided to come out and actually play tonight -- he actually went after the opposition and made a number of great attacking moves down the field, and eventually earned himself a goal, and an assist! As far as I'm concerned, Donovan has redeemed a bit of the respect he has lost in many, many true USA fans' eyes after his performance tonight. And I am giving Bradley permission to keep him on the team. If Sunil Gulati doesn't make Bob Bradley the permanent coach after the performance tonight, there is most definitely wrong with that man. Gulati has failed to please US soccer fans time and time again, and even had the ignorance to state that the coaching position was not dependent on the results they coaches ended up with in the matches. If that's the case, why did they get rid of Bruce Arena? And I must give credit to Eric Wynalda who agreed that that statement by Gulati was absolute...rubbish. That brings me to the commentating; I really dislike the fact that ESPN continues to use former national team player Eric Wynalda, Dave O'Brien, and Bruce Arena as the commentators for national team matches. Firstly, Wynalda seems to want to make every comment about himself -- he is always making comments like "Well, if that were me..." or "In this situation, what you have to do is...". Now O'Brien; before the World Cup, this man knew nothing about the game, since he is afterall a baseball announcer -- he continually mispronounces names and makes other mistakes like saying a player plays under contract for one club, when they really do not; simply put, O'Brien doesn't belong in football/soccer. And now for Bruce Arena; the man is the former national team coach, what business does he have commentating for the current national team and it's new manager. Arena was fired for poor results, so what makes him any more credible than myself to commentate about how the team is doing or what they need to do to ensure they get the result they are looking for? Anyway, that's my rant about that. All in all, I am beyond happy, in fact, you can call me ecstatic about the match. A full stadium (even if most of the fans present were Mexican), a decent looking pitch, and a very entertaining rivalry match! Go USA!
