... I find it so interesting the way Americans have jumped at Tyra Banks for being fat . . . when she is FAR from it .

What about teenagers who look like Tyra -
why are we sending a message that they have to be a size 0 and tall and skinny ?

I saw a commercial for the agency .
And one of the models was a waist 36 .
and the lady told her to stop eating because she was fat and it was unacceptable .

    What the hell ?

Just wondering . As a teenager (or an adult ...not sure who will read this )
what do you think of the standards, so to speak?

    Personally- I think they're ridiculous .
And as long as your BMI says you're not obese then you're fine .

The fashion industry is a different world and people have to realize that. I think instead of bashing the media, people should realize that it's not reality. No one looks like girls in fashion magazines, so deal with it. I find it annoying when people moan and groan about the emphasis put on being thin and fit. I think it should serve as a motivation to be healthy, though there are some over zealous people who take that a bit far...

If a girl is Tyra Banks' weight and people think she's fat, who cares? It's about self appreciation and looking up to the right people. Maybe if she admired her mother instead of random people on television, it wouldn't be a problem.

    What?
Are you serious ...no one looks like girls in fashion magazines ?
Okay- are we ignoring the thousands of teen girls that develop eating disorders ? That in actuality DO look like the girls in the fashion magazines

Also ; the statement that it is a fashion industry doesn't make it okay - you obviously don't realize the seriousness of such images being portrayed to young girls.

I see that you also don't realize that you have no control over your mind when you develop an eating disorder . You can't control what you think and hardly what you do concerning your weight in an attempt to lose it .

By my comment about no one looking like girls in magazines, I meant that the retouching and airbrushing are unrealistic, not the girl's weight. And I don't think that the fashion industry is going to change, so you might as well accept it. CLothes look cuter when they're small. Try to help girls who develop eating disorders in other ways. Create a charity that counsels girls with eating disorders caused by the big bad media or something.

Have you read about the sisters who died modeling in Uruguay?
It´s terrible! I´m from Argentina and there is a big debate about all the eating disorders in teenagers...

I personally have no issues with myself and it, but because of me being in ballet, I experience it.
I know people who don't eat, and then deny that there is anything wrong with them. There is a girl in the class who is 5'4 and weighs 80 pounds.

Well in ballet you have to be fit. You're not pressured to be malnutritioned, you're encouraged to stay in shape. Sure, there are some people who take it too far and develop eating disorders, but don't blame the fashion industry, or ballet for that. Even if every girl in every magazine were not so thin, people would still develop eating disorders. It's just an issue of self image.

What? You aren't pressured, HA! Your funny. Of course not in our studio, but in professional. You get a weigh in everyday, and you ARE pressured to los weight like that.

Be honest: If the same piece of clothing was advertised on someone fat, you would automatically thing it looked bad.

The media can't be blamed, if someone's dumb enough to have an EATING DISORDER because of a girl she saw in a magazine or on TV, that's their own fault, not the skinny girl in the picture.

I know there's a lot of emphasis placed on your weight, but no one tells you to starve yourself. There are other healthy ways of losing weight. And you're not weighed everyday, there's a weekly weigh in for most companies.

I totally agree. I wish people would stop finding scapegoats for their own problems.

Do you ballet? Yes, mostly weekly, but if you become top star it is sometimes daily. Also, they pressure you to be thin. Of course, if you know something the whole about losing 10 pounds in a week without starving yourself, do tell.

The fashion industry wants a "ideal" look for the models and making them skinny is ideal? That's how the companies of clothing are gaining money- from these skinny models..

Yes I do. I find fruit and water fasts accompanied with daily excercise does the trick. You can lose weight without developing an eating disorder. I've done it, and I'm certainly not anorexic. If you can't lose the weight, don't dance, it's very simple. Being a ballerina isn't for everyone. If you don't have high enough arches, you can't do pointe, but you don't see girls having foot surgery or bonding their feet to get them. And in general, not everyone's going to be thin. If people would just open their eyes and realize that, they'd stop blaming other people.

Starving yourself will just make you fatter in the long run. Once you go back to eating, your body will think youre going to do it again and store up everything it can get.

Personally, seeing celebrities anorexic makes me sad, they know better.

I know, but they won't listen. I like the new rule in Spain that makes anorexic or very skinny women not walk the calkwalk anymore until they gain some more weight. They seriously should put a positive image for the younger generaiton...

I think it is sick, but then again the models arent going on TV telling people to do that, teenage girls make that choice, then again, models being that skinny is sending the wrong message. I like that new rule in spain, I saw that on tv

This isn't a new issue and it's certainly not something that's just popping up in the media. There have been some studies that have shown a genetic link to eating disorders. In one study they even found that 10% of anorexic/bulimic patients had a family member with an eating disorder. If someone stops eating because they want to look like a model I find it very hard to believe they truly have an eating disorder. Eating disorders are just that, a disorder. It's not a choice.

That's not to say that I don't find the media disgusting though. In truth runway models are hardly ever what I would consider to be pretty and I get a strong urge to cook some fattening food when I see most other models.

    Not true .
I know ballet teachers that tell their students to starve themselves .
or to throw up after they eat .
Sooo don't say you aren't pressured
