Sorry, I don't play but I heard about a guy who had over $2 million worth of property and stuff on second life. That is pretty ridiculous, I mean just from a few pixels? Too bad neo stuff can't sell for that much, eh? If you start playing Americanpierg let me know, I would love to see what this game is all about!!

Is the game free or do you have to pay to play?

Its free, but if you want 2 accounts it costs money. I downloaded it for the money potential aswell a couple of days ago but cant get off the freakin first island.. and its pretty laggy even on my 512k connection.

There was a really interesting article about it in one of the Sunday Times supplements a month ago or so. What I took from it was that even in pixel life, people still want to outdo eachother even in pixels. Lucky for us on neo we dont have to pay for it.

I imagine the money making potential was much more before SL became so popular. I tried to sign up to check it out (I'm a big Sims 2 fan so wanted to see if it was anything similar) but it wont load the program on my home pc, and on my uni one the firewall blocks anyway so im screwed all round lol.

I'm wondering too. If we don't know what it is it shouldn't be that famous. And 2 million in US$ is crazy. Unbelievable.

well i tried it...and dont really like it. ALso reading around, i hear the money potential isnt as great as people made it out to be, you gotta be a programmer or artist of some sort to make it big, ie sell your own digital clothes. I did find this other game, Enthropia Universe, and am playing that instead. Some guy bought a virtual asteroid for 100k and made his money back and more within 1 year. THeyre also auctioning out 5 real life banking liscenses within the world where you and the other 4 winners will own exlcusive banking rights. lol if i had 200,000 in real US dollars,id so do it. Ill see how much real money I can make from this game within the first month. People are reporting how theyre makling enough to take them through college just by playing.

To give you a quick review of second life from my experience playing it:

Started out on the introduction island where i learned how to look cool and such things, then moved to a gun shop where i got a box of pistols for $1 thast someone gave me for nothing, then i just went around chatting to people and getting free stuff off of them and making weird friends, i usually go to poetry readings and metal clubs to hear the music cus theres loads of music in second life, theres combat areas too if you like fighting games cus it's all 3d, but you'll need a good graphics card, a speedy connection and a decent amount of ram, the specs are on the website.

The best thing i find about second life is everyone i have met there has been friendly and cool, and theres a second life for under 18's and even in the adult SL you can restrict access to only PG areas if you want to, theres something for everyone in it because it's almost entirely created by the people who play it as everything can be edited in the game.

It's in the editing and designing where people make money, i actually met a couple of the people who designed the clothes i bought in the game for my character, and i myself haven't spent any 'real' money in the game at all, but i'm not interested in making any either.
