    does this still leave the big gap where the ad use to be? or does it just remove it completely

    It still leaves the gaps, both for the top banner and side ones. There's a guide somewhere on this site that tells how to remove the banner gap, although it may be for IE only, I don't remember.

    download that
    restart FF

    Go to tools-> chromedit plus -> chrom edit
    click usercontent.css
    go to VERY BOTTOM


    div.ban,div#ban, #ban, .ban, #ban_spacer {display: none !important;}
    .ad_wrapper,.ad_wrapper_fixed,#ban,#ban_bottom {visibility:hidden !important;}
    .adBox2, .footOverlay { display:none !important; }

    Copy/paste ^ into the bottom, LEAVE THE OTHER TEXT.
    Click save
    restart FF
