Well, my definition would be biased so - the Wikipedia definition says: Affirmative action (or positive discrimination) is a policy or a program whose stated goal is to redress past or present discrimination through active measures to ensure equal opportunity, generally concerning education, employment or seats in parliament and/or government.[1]
Affirmative Action basically requires large companies to employ certain percentages of minorities. Take Walmart, for instance. I believe that their management that hires are encouraged to look at minority applications to consider before others. If the company doesn't employ a certain percentage of minorities, I believe it brings them under suspicion of discrimination. This also applies to colleges. Read more about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Affirmative_action I don't really agree with Affirmative Action. With Affirmative Action in play, say a Caucasian man and an African American man both apply for the same job. This company has not met it's "quota" for percentage of employed minorities. Despite perhaps being equally or more deserving of the position, the Caucasian gentleman is not chosen because he is not a minority. That completely screws over the person who isn't a minority. Additionally, I believe EVERYONE, black, white, or red, has to start somewhere. I think they should all have to work for their position... I guess the old saying "Nothing in life is free" is falsified here if you're a minority. Not meaning to offend anyone.
It's not like minorities are handed job positions or college positions. They have to work for them just like everyone else. A minority isn't going to get into a top ten unversity with a sucky gpa and bad test scores. Who cares if they get preference if they are qualified for a position? If they are qualified, and a company wants to hire a minority, then oh well. A company filling their "quota" of 2 minorities out of their entire staff isn't too much to ask. You're implying that minorities don't earn what they get, and that's offensive whether you mean to offend or not.
IMO affirmative action is foolish, it seems to me that it's actually keeping alive a part of racial separation. Jobs should go to the most qualified individual no matter what, by enforcing this foolish quota the gov't is always bringing up the issue of race... it feels like an old practice to me...
I do not agree with affirmative action. I think people should be accepted for anything based on their qualifications, not from some "quota" they have to meet of having different races of people there. It's so lame because sometimes the less qualified gets the job...and this goes both ways. I hate things like that too. And the stupid ERA is making me mad too because women want the be considered equal to get paid equal and other things like that, but they also want to be favored in court cases with being the mother of a child or they want to be favored with being paid alimony. It's so lame, if they wanted to be treated equal, then I want to see them do every job a man can do...they can't and that's a fact. Sorry I got side tracked but still kinda in the same ballpark.
Well, if it was a white person getting that preferance it would be known as racism, and everyone would start getting angry. (for good reason) But they should get angry no matter who is getting the unfair treatment.
no, i dont agree with that, someone i know wanted to become a firefighter and did all the training, but in canada they do they crap so because he was a white male he was turned away, he didnt have anything else to go into, he did everything to become a firefighter
I don't like the way you said that "Nothing is life is free" is falsified for minorities. You make it sound as if minorities get things for free all the time. Which, really isn't the case. The only reason affirmative action was brought around was because certain colleges throughout the United States were denying minorities simply because they were minorities, rather than their GPAs, and test scores. I have a perfect example of this: I had two friends who applied to college. They both had superb grades. One was black, and one was white. The college had a pre-admission selective process- based on grades only. In this case, the black student had a higher GPA, and higher test scores than my other friend. They both applied to the same college. My white friend got in, and the black one got a rejection letter. How can you explain that in any other way?
That's racism/discrimination and should not be accepted. By why let someone say, "this college needs 100 minorities this year"? That doesn't help anything. Maybe only 90 are qualified, but maybe 200 are. Even thought discrimination does still occur, affirmitive action is reverse discrimination, it's not accomplishing anything. The answer is not to punish anyone who isn't a minority.
That is a bunch of bull If you need to have 100 white people at the job and 20 of them must be black but you have hired 79 people and a white man and a black man showed up and the white many is perfect for the postions but the black man is only aceptable they have to hire the black man. I belive my cousin wasn't accepted to Notre Dame cause of that reason
wtf is your problem?how stupid and inconsiderate r u?u shouldnt have said that i think your going to get banned.
