I've only ever seen it in pictures but I find it absolutely mezmerizing, and it's something I've been very fascinated by for a long time. Hopefully this winter I'll be taking a trip over to Alaska to see them in person. :D

Has anyone here ever seen them in real life? :)

The further north you go the better, but yeah, I've seen them in Michigan.

Haven't been to America, so I haven't had the chance to see them in real life!
But I have seen them in a documentary hosted by David Attenborough!
On another note, the movie "The Golden Compass" by Phillip Pullman is coming out. Originally called 'Northern Lights'

I never saw them. My parents did though, and they took some pictures of it.

Yup. :p Though in some rare instances, it's reached as far south as Arizona. I wish I was as into the aurora then as I am now...I would have had a field day taking pictures. :p

Aurora Borealis are wonderful and very strange... but I've seen them only in my science book.
Here in Europe they can be seen from Lapland, in the north Finland if I remember right, where there is also the Midnight Sun for some months! And maybe from Norway and Sweden too.
I'd really like to see these places for a lot of reasons *-*

Unfortunately, no, not usually. :\ I'm in CT and that's not far enough north most of the time, either. They're most commonly seen in the regions inside the ovals you see here: http://www.ukssdc.ac.uk/gbdc/ovals.gif Which unfortunately CT and NJ don't make it inside of. :\
Like I said up there, though, there have been instances where the auroras are strong enough to reach as far south as Arizona...but the last time that happened was in 2002 or 2004 or something I think. :p I'd say it's time for another one!

Where in NJ do you live? I live there too and I don't ususally find people on forums who do. As for me, I live just across the bridge from Philly. I've been up to northern NJ a few times and I've gotta say, all the sports stadiums in the Meadowlands are impressive, especially Giants Stadium.

Anyway, I once did a report specifically on the Northern Lights. They were pretty interesting to learn about, I bet they'd be cool to see in real life.
