Anyone else notice that the day after Halloween they were playing Christmas songs on the radio, advertising Christmas shopping on TV, and even putting up the trees in WalMart? Odd.

Christmas anywhere isn't for two months. That's the point. I was shocked they were putting things together so early this year. Usually they wait until after thanksgiving atleast.

The sooner they can start the subliminal messaging the more the mindless drones will spend on useless crap. I hate commercials and I really really hate the holiday season in America. The embodiment of consumer ism. Anyone ever wonder why Santa is red and white in America? Well it's because of Coke...a soft drink created the contemporary concept of Saint Nick. Tree decorating is Pagan and Jesus wasn't born on Christmas...

Every year, they seem to start advertising earlier and earlier..

    It's annoying..

Thanksgiving should be advertised to promote love and thanks to everything we have..

Not Christmas which is thanks to everything we can get.. ugh..

Wow.. I think this topic really shows a problem with today's society.. The fact that everyone has to complain at every possible opportunity.

For goodness sake, quit whining!! It's all people ever seem to do now. It's so fashionable to shun the holiday season and throw words like "consumerism" around. No one has to buy anything they don't want to. If people are weak minded enough to be influenced by a couple of adverts with jingly bell music playing in the background then that really is their problem.

The holiday season can be and is about more than that to some people. I'm not talking about religion. I'm talking about relaxing, having some fun, enjoying the decorations and all those silly films and songs you used to love when you were six years old.

I just don't know why people have to make such a negative fuss about it. The words "get over it" spring to mind, I'm afraid :p

I'm not anti-holiday season. I was just noting that people were setting up earlier than ever this year. If you have 2-3 months of holiday prep before the holiday actaully gets here then, to me, the holiday is not as special

    Amen. Thank you. :)
I just about to post something leaning in this general direction; in regards to people whining at every opportunity.

I, myself, find it very pleasing that once the Halloween decorations have been put away I can begin focusing on Christmas - which is one of the largest Holidays of the American year (if not the largest). I can focus on purchasing presents for people (call it what you want, I love seeing the look on the face of people when they're present with a gift), setting up my wrapping department (for some reason I find a sense of joy in wrapping presents), baking delicious pies and goodies to be delivered to the Homeless Shelter, Nursing Homes and Hospitals around town, and I can begin to endulge in those cheesy films I loved so much when I was younger.

To me, the Holiday season is more then just presents and throwing money out the window. It's about the time I spent with friends and family. It's about venturing out the the Holiday Stroll (a city-wide effort put on in downtown where the shops stay open late, offering snacks and hot chocolate and there are performances by the highschool dance squad and stuff... it's really a lot of fun) and seeing the world from a different perspective. And of course, the Holiday season is about decorating that one perfect Christmas tree with my mother... and the pups of course; they always seem to sneak off with ornaments.

But it does break my heart to see people whining about the Holiday season. Complaining about consumerism and then finding out those same people are thrilled to discover someone purchased a very expensive gaming system or computer program for them. Talk about hypocrisy.

Take any rigorous religion course in college. Schools that teach Creationism need not apply. Whether or not you believe in Jesus as the son of God, aka Jewish, Agnostic, etc, he was a historical figure and there are pretty concrete ties to this historical figure and the person depicted in the bible. Using texts from the times, very few in fact, and writings about text from that time, much more common, researches have been able to tell much about the events in the Bible. I'm not wanting to get into a discussion of religion or insult anyones beliefs should they take the Bible in perfection as my point was to bash American consumer holidays.

If I remember right, and I admit I'm a Phyics major not a Religion major your not even in the right month.

here it's off the internet so take it with a grain of salt but with a cursory glance it looks pretty accurate from what I was taught:
    http://users.aristotle.net/~bhuie/birthday.htm

I beg to differ. The biggest problem with America right now is it's willingness to play the sheep the other is it's willingness to stay ignorant. I agree that to buy because of an advertisement is weak but that doesn't mean I want to constantly listen to ithem for 2 months every year.

I HATE, with capitols, having advertisements being forced in my face. I hate having to sit an extra 30min to an hour in traffic on my way home from work. Or having to wade through throngs of people to buy my groceries or razor blades because they're "Christmas Shopping"...in November. I hate hearing songs about fake consumer figures being played a month early every 2 min in any public location...aka any store, mall, job site, elavator because those songs are considered safe and time appropriate.

Whether or not I feel the holidays have special meaning in other ways, such as you describe, bares no weight on my points at all. I love the time off, I love my family. Hell I even love the excuse to have a tree and in doses sing silly songs and buy into the whole nativity story. BUT that crap doesn't need to start the second Halloween is over. I foresee 20 years from now hearing Crhistmast songs after Valentines day. Silly you say? How silly is it to hear them after Halloween and yet you say bitching about it is more of a problem.

    ****

This fits the same things I said before. This has absolutely nothing to do with stores advertising in November. If you really want to you can buy Christmas presents off the internet in February. Rapping papper is sold year round. You can donate your time or food to shelters whenever you want. And Christmas story is just as good in March...if not exactly mood appropriate. My fustration isn't with what you're describing as Christmas. My frustration is with all the soulless consumer related crap in November...I mean you have to know what I mean even if it doesn't bother you.

So tell me why we can't have all this without all the things that annoy me and many others to no end.

I don't own any of those systems. I've never early adopted a gaming system in my life. My one spending vice are computers but I piecemeal them throughout the year with my hard earned money. So I take offense to you saying that my complaints are hypocritical. I'm not against the "Holiday Season". I'm against all the artificial crap designed to make money that's been made the focus of America's holiday season. You see any commercials about helping your local homeless shelters lately? And the even if you do, I remember one a few years ago, there will be 1000x Walmart Christmas commercials IN NOVEMBER to that one.
That's why it upsets me. I'm not just whining I'm honestly frustrated with what the majority of our country looks at as being Christmas.

yeah that is funny... this year they are predicting that it will be a bad christmas season money wise because the economy is a little low so they are even setting up christmas tree stores early
