- Harry Potter fans, the rumors are true: Albus Dumbledore, master wizard and Headmaster of Hogwarts, is gay.

J.K. Rowling, author of the mega-selling fantasy series that ended last summer, outed the beloved character Friday night while appearing before a full house at Carnegie Hall. After reading briefly from the final book, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," she took questions from audience members.

She was asked by one young fan whether Dumbledore finds "true love."

"Dumbledore is gay," the author responded to gasps and applause.

She then explained that Dumbledore was smitten with rival Gellert Grindelwald, whom he defeated long ago in a battle between good and bad wizards. "Falling in love can blind us to an extent," Rowling said of Dumbledore's feelings, adding that Dumbledore was "horribly, terribly let down."

I have to say the whole time I had never thought the greatest wizard in those books was gay. It gives me a whole new vision of the books. I just never saw it coming, Rowling never gave any real clue about it. I'm sure she could have just not mentioned it to anybody. Then nobody would be upset because I can guarantee nobody knew that he was gay before she revealed that.

 

Wow, I now look at the Harry Potter books/movies in a totally different form. Funny how she reveals it after the final book is released.

 

she didnt have to reveal that... little kids dont need to know about all that stuff till they get older.... i would hate to explain to a kid wat being gay means....

 

She just wanted to atarct a new audience to Harry Potter.

It's good to bring these kind of issues up for discussion when you're young. Hopefully it will change new generations to become more tolerant and discriminate less. =)
