so ive just been watching this terry pratchett documentary about euthanasia and if it really is the best way to do things in the right situation and had about an hour long debate about it with my partner. he believes to an extent that its wrong because the person could live a relatively normal life for months but instead decide to take their life. i do agree to an extent but then i think what if they decide to put off the decision and end up trapped and unable to do what they originally wanted to. anyway i digress. i wholeheartedly agree with euthanasia in times when people have truly debilitating diseases and conditions but not if they are feeling depressed with life etc. look forward to hearing your views.
I am for it and then not. Euthanasia to me can be used in some cases and not in others. Like I don't want to say Yes or No or I don't know because I do know. If in a case the dog had an incurable disease or in serious pain and owners cannot afford like the operation or something then yes. But then you got the pounds which some do put dogs down because they cannot find owners. I once watched this video about a lady who worked at a pound and how she explained what they did and I cried. That is my answer in words.
A person has a right to take their own life. As much as they have a right to live it. I think it is a stupid choice. but it is their stupid choice to make.
I say heck no. Anybody who suffers from a mental problem to the extent that they want to kill themselves needs to receive treatment, whether from counselling or from medicine and/or surgery. People underestimate the power of counselling and a bit of friendship. Nobody should ever give up on life, and we shouldn't give up on other people's lives either.
Nothing on Earth is impossible to overcome. Pain can be tolerated/managed even if it isn't completely dissipated. Mental illnesses will be cured as human technology progresses. There is no reason to quit life even with a terminal illness. Don't confuse taking a person off of life-support with Euthanasia.. they are two different things. If someone is literally moments from dying, then that isn't really the same thing.
(Summary, if you're too boring or lazy to read this gold: Euthanasia is just bungee jumping without the rope.) First of all, euthanasia hasn't been properly defined. Without a definition, we are debating in circles. Definition of euthanasia, grabbed from wikipedia,: refers to the practice of intentionally ending a life in order to relieve pain and suffering. Interestingly, it seems as though it comes from the Greek word meaning "good death", which is a good starting point for my position. People often claim such a thing as the "sanctity of life", or something like that, as reason for holding positions that are "pro-life" in some degree. The practice of euthanasia is not something anyone would often as the first solution to try when problems arise, since it would be the last thing they could do (being dead and all). Yet, why should it not be an option at all? If the debate is whether or not it should be practiced, the obvious answer is : yes, of course. We are autonomous beings who should be allowed to pursue our own desires, as long as we aren't infringing on other people's rights to do the same. The question of when euthanasia should be done is a different one, but is also important. If a person who is classified as a rational adult wants to smoke, do we stop them? No, even though it could lead to death. We let people do things that are obviously harmful all the time. Risking death is not uncommon. Then again, we don't let mentally disabled people or children make these choices. As long as the person is of a certain age and considered a rational person, euthanasia should be allowed.
