Google's OS, Chrome, is planning to release in the second half of 2010 and compete with Microsoft. They say it will take about 3 years to make a "big" impact on the economy and Windows.

Ooh!! Free, online office programs :p

What do you guys think? Who will win?

Well, I think Microsoft, to try to compete with them this way, is going to be hard on Google financially. Microsoft, now already way ahead in the OS department, won't let Google just step in. That would destroy their whole company. So, I'm saying that Google releases it, and I don't think they will be that successful. I really can't see Microsoft falling hard right now. They're coming with a lot of counters, and Windows 7 will be a big hit to Google Chrome (OS) too.

I think google will win, most people aren't familiar with google chrome, so that's the only problem. But if more people knew about it, I think that more people would use and like google chrome.

Nah, it can't be like Linux. It's supposed to be web-based. It's not customizable like Linux is...I actually think Google's OS will fail, same thing as Bing. Microsoft and Google own their own territory in the technology world. Now, they are both trying to attack each other's fields...failz for both :p

I really see this as Google stepping in where MS is lacking. The Chrome OS is being designed around the Netbooks. Windows 7 simply won't run good on a Netbook.

First of all 7's requirements are just too much for the average Netbook, although Netbooks are getting better. But the graphics alone (I know you can disable Aero, but it still eats resources for graphics) require a 256mb video adapter.

Second, the Netbook screen is small. Until MS comes out with a "skin" that will accommodate the screen's lack of size, I believe that Chrome's "built around the small screen" idea will pick up quickly for those using the Netbook.

But what this REALLY comes down to is:
Will the market put enough pressure on manufacturers to ship Chrome standard or will MS pressure win that battle?

As far as jumping in a new field, MS has done very well in the past. One striking example is the console industry. The X-Box had a lot of reviewers saying the same about MS and Nintendo and I'm sure many of us here remember the "battle's" those two CEO's had with each other.

Bleh, Google's still a younger company with a younger CEO. They still have a long way to go before they just take over the whole industry. I'm sure Bill Gates and Microsoft have been challenged numerous times before just like this. He, ie: Apple. Yeah, still a big fight between Apple and Windows...lol, now, Google's stepping in.

I'm not really sure it's that "decent" yet. Idk, wouldn't it be kinda weird to have an OS run in a web browser? It might actually be like that...that's like the idea.

I couldn't agree with you more. Just can't seem to get my head wrapped around this "OS in a web browser" idea. Will def be playing with it when it comes out, just can't make an opinion about it yet.

Does anyone know of any other OS's in a web browser that I can test out?

It will definitely interesting to find out how exactly they plan on running the os, will it be something that loads the majority of it's main processes in RAM, or what will be stored locally, will the apps run in the browser on an external server like thinnet or will the apps be local?

This could be very cool. B)
