People who are afraid of tanning because of the possibility of skin cancer need to learn how to live.
I know right? Just like the people who are afraid of smoking because of the possibility of lung cancer
My great grandmother passed away at the age of 96. natural causes. never had a lick of cancer of any kind in all her life. she smoked since she was 8 ... she shucked oysters peeled shrimp and even worked on shrimping boats for most her life which means she got tons of sun. so sun = cancer? nah .. smoking = cancer? nah ... cancer = cancer and the docs are blaming everything else? yup.
Right, so you're using a sample size of 1 as a representative of the whole population? That's a pretty big assumption you've got there. As for smoking = cancer, while we can't prove it in a designed experiment due to ethical reasons, observational studies have shown a correlation between the two. Although it doesn't prove causation, there exists a strong correlation. Studies have been done that points towards a link, and although there may be a lot of confounding variables it's dangerous to just push the results away because "I know somebody who etc..".
I agree with tanning but not with smoking. <3
That's not entirely fair. I am a redhead with very pale skin and no, I don't tan (literally can't). It took me a long time to accept it, but I did. This does not prevent me from "living my life", I just have to wear a lot of sun screen. And honestly, I would rather be pale and have nice skin when I am 60 and not get cancer. As for smoking...hate it. My boyfriend smokes and I am convinced that it is going to kill both of us someday. Granted, I used to smoke when I was younger so I'm being a bit hypocritical.
Ok so my grandpa died from lung cancer two years ago after being a heavy smoker. My grandma who was also a big smoker for most of her life now also has lung cancer and will eventually die from it as it gets worse. So does that make my survey more valid than yours since I have two cases and you only have one? Not exactly but you get my point. Does it ALWAYS lead to cancer? No of course not. But could there possibly be a link? YES. I am right there with you. I can't tan to save my life, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying the sun and the outdoors. I just use sunscreen, why not be safe?
