I've seen a couple threads about maps and whether they're worth it, so I've decided to compile everything I know about maps into a guide that will hopefully help people.

Two kinds of maps will be covered in this guide. Treasure maps and world challenge maps.

    Treasure Maps
    --------------------------------

What kind of maps are there?
There are are 6 different kinds of treasure maps:
    -Secret Laboratory Map
    -Petpet Laboratory Map
    -Treasure Map
    -Underwater Map
    -Spooky Map
    -Space Map

Where can I find treasure maps?
Usually full sets can be found in the trading post, and individual pieces can be found in user shops, auctions, and the trading post. Some map pieces can also be found by random events. The map pieces that can be found in random events include: spooky, treasure, lab, and petpet lab maps.

Where do I redeem my treasure?
Game room>>Search "treasure maps">>Click the link that corresponds with the map you are trying to redeem.

    Here's a direct link: http://neopets.com/games/treasure.phtml

What can I get from the treasure maps?
Here are pictures of completed maps and what you get from them:

    Secret Laboratory Map
    [IMG]
    What you get:
    -Around 10k
-Daily access to the lab ray. You can choose the pet you want to zap each time.

    Petpet Laboratory Map
    [IMG]
    What you get:
    -Around 8k
-Daily access to the petpet lab ray. You can choose which petpet to zap each time.
-You must have the secret laboratory map before you can access the petpet lab
****Note: Unattaching a petpet will return it to its original form. If your petpet gets zapped into an avvie petpet (i.e. Mazzew, Snowbunny, etc.) and is the proper age, it WILL get you the avvie. If your petpet's original form is an avvie petpet and it gets zapped into a non-avvie petpet, you will NOT get the avvie.

    Spooky Treasure Map
    [IMG]
    What you get:
    -Around 10k
    -Spooky food items

    Original Treasure Map
    [IMG]
    What you get:
    -Around 10k
    -Various rare items
-Possible prizes: food, toys, trading cards, battledome items, and neggs

    Underwater Map
    [IMG]
    What you get:
    -Around 10k
    -Various rare items and food

    Space Map
    [IMG]
    What you get:
    -around 10k
    -Rare space items

Note: because the items are random, it is rather difficult to determine the chances of getting rare items from the maps.

So, how much do the full maps cost?
**Current prices as of January 13, 2007
    -Secret lab map: 590k-650k
-Petpet lab map: 9k (very stable price, each piece is always around 900-1k)
    -Spooky map: 55k-65k
    -Treasure map: 210k-220k
    -Underwater map(retired): 830k-900k
    -Space map(retired): 750k-850k

    Is it worth it?
Some maps are definitely worth it. Others are a gamble. The secret lab map and the petpet lab map are two that are definitely worth it because you have access to the lab rays forever. Plus, the petpet lab map practically pays for itself once you claim your prize. The spooky map may be worth it as you can get a snorkle snout from it, but it's not guaranteed. The other maps are a gamble because the items you get are not guaranteed to be worth the amount you paid for the map and it's a lot to risk on a gamble.

    World Challenge Maps

    What are world challenges?
World challenges are competitions against other unknown neopians. There is a designated game, and the player with the most wins in the hour wins the challenge. Wins are tallied by game scores. Everytime you get a score higher than your opponent, you get a point added to your wins. Everytime you get a score lower than your oppenent, a point will be deducted from your tally.

There are different worlds you can play in, and the games relate to the worlds. The games change daily. Here's a list of the worlds:

    Faerieland
    Haunted Woods
    Krawk Island
    Kreludor
    Lost Desert
    Maraqua
    Meridell
    Mystery Island
    Neopian Central
    Terror Mountain
    Tyrannia
    Virtupets Space Station

Does it cost anything to enter?
Yes, there is a one time entry fee of 100nps per hour.

What do I get for winning?
The winner of the world challenge will receive a piece of a picture. You can only win once an hour even if you enter more than on challege per hour.

Each picture, or map, consists of 20 pieces. So, you'd have to win at least 20 world challenges in the same world to get a complete map...if you're lucky. The pieces are awarded at random, so you could win the same pieces multiple times. The best way to get all 20 different pieces is to trade them.

Once you have a complete picture, you can convert it for a prize. There are three different difficulties for the worlds. You need to make sure that if it's your first picture, it is difficulty 1. For example, Faerieland WC pieces 1.1, 1.2, 1.3,...,1.20 would be converted before Faerieland WC pieces 2.1, 2.2, 2.3,..., 2.20 can be converted.

Note: The difficulty of the maps does not affect the rarity of the prize. For example, if you could convert WC Faerieland 1.1-1.20 and get a cloud paint brush and then convert WC Faerieland 2.1-2.20 and get a codestone.

    What are the prizes?
When you convert a map, you get 2k (always) and one (and only one) rare item. Prizes are usually paint brushes, petpet paint brushes, petpets, and codestones.

What are my chances of getting a good prize?
Personally, out of the 10 maps that I have converted, 6 have been paint brushes, 2 petpet paint brushes, 1 codestone, and 1 petpet.

The following information was provided by blobenterprises.
    Chances of winning:
    A Paint Brush- 38.24% (90,000-395,000 value)
    A Petpet Paint Brush- 50.0% (20,000-215,000 value)
    A Petpet- 11.76% (45,000-75,000 value)

    Most common prizes after converting:
    Petpet: Pawkeet
Petpet Paint Brush: Halloween Petpet Paint Brush
    Paint Brush: Cloud Paint Brush

    Prize values for converting:
Average prize value (including 2,000np): 121,200np

World challenges can be a little confusing, so if you have any questions, feel free to pm me or post here. :)

If there's anything I missed, let me know and I'll add it. I hope I helped!

I'll try to compile a somewhat accurate list of what's been awarded before, but it might take a little bit of time. The items are random, so it proves a bit difficult.

I don't quite understand your question, but I'll try to answer it anyway. The prizes you get from converting the map do vary from map to map. For example, if you convert WC Haunted Woods 1.1-1.20 more than once, you won't get the same prize. It's kind of like the treasure maps. The prizes are random, but slightly more predictable.
