I'm a second year at uni, and am currently decideding what to do when I graduate, but alas, I havent got a clue. Well I do, I've narrowed it down to three options. I'm going to decide what I do from the results from here. I've already asked family and friends and am currently on even standing with each thing. Help a poor student, decide her life! (if this isnt in the right place feel free to move it, I didnt want to put it in debates as it's not really a debate) Do I... A) Take an internship with a large publishing house and working my way to some kind of editors post B) Do one or two years to convert my current degree in English Literature to a Law degree and become a solicitor. C) Neither of the above and bum around for another year doing a Masters in Literature specifiying probably in Modernist women writers and the contrast between British and American ones (Such as Sylvia Plath and The Bloomsbury group).
Well that seems like a choice you'd have to make on your own and not let strangers decide for you, right... I'll pass on voting, but good luck deciding.
Yeah i guess it depends on what you like to do and if your ready to start working, also on what career you think you will enjoy the most in the future.
Are youy serious!? The life is yours, choose your own path... And it is only you who can decide the right choice/
Go with what you like to do the most. If you like helping poor people you could be one of those free lawyers but it is just your choice
Free lawyers? I dont think so beacuse you most have some money first in order to do something for free. You gotta make a living first before oding what you like..
There really aren't any free lawyers anyway. Even lawyers appointed by the court generally get paid to represent people. There's no cost to the client, though.
Do whatever you feel like you'd enjoy the most, don't do something boring that you wouldn't want to do everyday of your life.
do what your heart is content with, because its this that you will be doing for the rest of your life.
Thats the point, I'd enjoy everything on that list as much as the other. That's why I cant make my mind up
well a good idea would be, do them all, .one after another, that way you have more options when the time comes
I would say law just because i like law the best and its the most interesting to me out of your other choices
Well, how about taking a different look at things? Do you want to actually make any money in your career? Editors don't make much unless you manage to snag a major position, a master's in women's studies will be essentially worthless in the real world. You could *maybe* teach with a degree like that, but probably nothing else. How much debt are you comfortable carrying (law school's expensive!)? How much time are you willing to invest in your education? (I want out of school likeyesterday, so I'd take the shortest route!) Do you prefer to work by yourself? On a team? In an office? In an academic environment? In research? When you imagine your ideal work environment, what does it look/feel like? The answers to these questions will help you determine what's the best long-term fit for you. There are a TON of things I think are interesting and I think I would enjoy. For example, being a police detective. But I know myself well enough to know that I've romanticized the job a bit; I don't take orders well, I'd have a really hard time letting someone go if I knew they were guilty but just couldn't find the evidence, and I have no desire to work 18-hour shifts or be constantly on-call. So look at the jobs and decide what you want to live with.... and go from there.
Goldengirl, good job with the informational and long post. I hope it is useful to you as you choose your future. There are many paths to choose and one path can lead to many..
Thanks. =) I've done a lot of soul-searching myself, unfortunately what I came up with is "I don't wanna work! -kick stomp whine-" =D But in the field I'm in (vague reference!), I find myself helping people identify their life passions a LOT.
