    Define popular...

    I disagree with your statment considering when you think of internet gaming the first 4 that come to mind are;

    Wow- World of warcraft
    Neopets
    Runescape
    Gia

So i actuallly think in variation of your examples neopets is very popular.

the 4 games I mentioned are not the best game I thought of.
of course WOW and neopets are much better,
I'm saying that why on Earth would people choose to play these games instead of Neopets or even pay for it,
because it does seem like more ppl are playing these -

    as a fact,

    neopets - Players Online: 26,386
    gaia - 89,031 Gaians Online

The fact that neopets has run for over ten years isn't a fair gauge at its popularity. Neopets will always have players, it will always have devoted fans.

The other fact, however, is that neopets has become a cold-hearted corporation. It sets out to make a profit through extensive advertising, marketing ploys, membership, and otherwise. This detracts from the favorable aspects of the game, hence pulling popularity down.

To answer your question: it is popular. Just not as popular as it could be if Viacom cared.

and some people play it for fun or to waste time

    and also its really addictive

I believe Gaia has the biggest forum from the world, hasn't it?
But I'm sure Neopets has more 'fan sites' or sites related to Neopets.

I agree it depends on what your definition for popular is. I know I've been playing for over 8 years and I'm just addicted to the site. It's my way of escaping the real world and I find it so much fun. I think Neopets it popular because if you mention it in public people know what you're talking about. I think that means it's fairly popular. I mean of all the games you listed I don't think the general population would be able to know it and have an idea of what it is about.

I do wish Viacom was a little more friendly about it though, and actually acted like they cared..

Just because they have more online players at one time doesnt mean anything....most of the games online you named have to have more than one player to be fun..with neopets...you could jump on there around 1 am and just play games until your bored and dont want to play anymore...you dont need anyone else to be online.

Indeed. TNT is slow as hell. I could whip out most of these plots within a month, as long as somebody did the artwork. Rapid development and changes are the key. That's why Marapets experienced a huge growth, every week or so some new feature came out -- but the guy who runs it kinda sucks so it never really reached the upper realms.

I remember seeing 43k people online once, now it stays around 16 - 25... I think people are losing interest. Which is why neopets are planning on bring out more avatars! xD

I use to chat with Ian, and well, he use to own maraqua.com and tried forging that into a seperate Neopets - he got forced to close it because he offered Neopets' Maraquan pets up for adoption. Besides that, he closed Maraqua.com and made Marapets. See the connection? Complete and utter rip. Now other petsites have to endure being bombed with advertising for marapets, it's shameful.

Neopets is so simple, it's a community and an economy and that is why we play it - for people we meet or for goals we want to meet. The lack of new content will kill the site, slowly :<

Perhaps not as slow as you may think though.

Probably well after we retire from Neopets though.

I try to use other sites, but for some reason I come back to Neo, maybe it is because it is more well known and subconsciously earning millions on there gives me more merit than say, a small unknown pet site. More satisfaction I suppose.

    Agree with that!

Yeah I think neopets is pretty damn popular and as many others i do keep coming back to it though at the same time that means I keep leaving. Though every time I leave I end up missing out on a plot or something.

That's from Nutty Commentary in regards to the advertising saturation of Neopets.

I don't think twice about Neopets losing popularity, because lets face it, the whole site feels forgotton about and like a staff less generator is producing the same (often late) mediocre content, releasing weekly contests etc. The only thing I think is keeping Neopets a float is the stupid avatar and battledome chat boards! I remember a time when the neoboards were booming all the time, now it's obviously hardly ever. As for the ads, a word of advice to Viacom, if you wanna kill your audience, bombard them with ads and never update your content. Like Nutty Commentary states, Neo even have a game making fun of popups. They keep that game, yet do what they do? Completely hypocritical. But because they are a faceless corporation things like that don't matter anymore. Users do not matter. Quantity is the only thing they seem to think about: freeze all accounts. They will make more. We have a high user count. But one day, I believe people will stop rebuilding and move on to better things. Im beginning to hate the site xD
