I use a macbook basically what can I do to make my computer hard to hack? I have a house mate who is very good with computers and I don't want him to be able to get into my computer... I know this is a totally noobish question and you are all probably going to use a whole lot of words I don't understand xD

I am also using a MacBook- the G5 older one. (The new one is the G6)
I did some research for ya...
These are the only Macintosh Viruses released in the past 100 years. :)
    ANTI
ANTI is a Macintosh virus. ANTI.A is a variant that removed ANTI.B from Macintosh computers.

    Code 252 virus
Code 252 is a Macintosh System 6 and System 7 virus.

    CDEF virus
CDEF is a Macintosh System 6 file infector.

    Code 1 virus
Code 1 is a Macintosh System 6 and System 7 System file and application infector.

    Melissa
Melissa virus, one of the most infectious viruses to date, is a mass-mailing email worm and macro virus combined.

    AOL4FREE
AOL4FREE is part hoax, part reality. A legitimate Macintosh program named aol4free exists. There is also a hoax stating aol4free deleted files on users hard drives. There is a Trojan spread as AOL4free.com, dubbed A4F-Spoof by most antivirus vendors.

Oooh reading that reminds me of:

Hehe Urm you can still be hacked without a virus being used though right?

Well I mean unless you download the file from an email or a unsafe website, you should be fine.
If you want, however, use a Bittorent engine like Transmission (Click me) and download a Norton Anti Virus torrent (Click Me).

    I LOVE Hackers!

    It's such a great movie.
Yay 1995 (amazing year in the film industry =D)

    Oh, errr...I'm on topic.
Do you have a wireless card?

    Scary...
I don't have a Mac, so I can't really help much more than to post that, but it's kind of something to think about either way.

Yeah thats not off topic -.-
    ---
Ive never heard of that movie before...
    ---
The MacBook comes with a wireless Airport Card built in- people use that for WiFi, not a Verizon/ATNT wireless card. If you turn off Sharing and you don't download files from bad/untrusted sources you should be fine. :)

Hackers is the name of the movie that Fendi posted a picture of. I wasn't drawing it out of thin air.

    http://www.informationweek.com/news/sec ... =207000434

It's almost a year old, so I don't know if it's still valid.

But I'm sure that the paranoia is valid. =D

Unfortunately, I'm still not much help on how to prevent it. Put passwords on everything and hope that someone knowledgeable in the ways of creating secret Macdogs to put in the alleyways and secret passageways of your computer replies to this thread?

    Maybe?

Im fairly sure MacBook Air has less security, thus being easier to hack.

Well... you could make a really long password that will make it harder to guess. You could also keep an eye on your computer at all times and turn it off when you're not using it... If you have some files that you don't want your housemate to see then use http://www.altomac.com/hide_folders/ to hide them. Hope that helps :)

I doubt your house mate is THAT good with computers to be able to hack your computer. Just put a password on it and you should be fine.

Hide it under your bed when you aren't home? xD You can use security vault on your files, and if he gets the password wrong it locks and deletes your files? I think thats what my macbook said about it x3
