Hi Im fairly experienced with desktop computers but Im planning to go buy a new laptop soon...Does anyone know of whats an average/decent battery life? And if you could specify for what kind of usage it would be? (Like battery life for just using word processing or battery life when watching movies etc)

Well... I reckon 5 years at most? But after 1 year it won't work as if it were new.

But your notebook battery will deteriorate over time whether you use it or not.

    That's a fact.

Oh and found something interesting :

Top 15 ways to extend our laptop battery life.

Battery life largely depends on what the laptop is used for and the hardware inside.
My last laptop was quite powerfull but the batttery life was awefull mainly because nothing was aimed at battery economy. Just using windows and explorer, I was able to get around 2h15m from the battery. Playing a game: 1h15m.

Nowadays, with new technologies (i.e.: centrino from intel), you can get almost to 4 hours from a single charge. You can also buy a more powerfull battery to extend the time a bit more.

@Fasty: show me your laptop. If you can get 10 hours from one single charge, I want to know how ;)

Finally, how long will the battery last is almost a guess... My first laptop, the battery died after 1 years. Now I'm using a dell laptop and after 3 years, the battery still hold the charge for ~3 hours under normal condition.

    Enough. :arf:

Most laptops will not hold a charge over 4 hours. 7-10 hours? That makes me laugh.

The only laptop I know that holds a 7+ hour charge is the new 17" Macbook Pro.

38 hours!?!?!?! My computer has 96% battery health after roughly 1000 complete cycles and I only get (a VERY MAX) 3 1/2 hours...

Your friend is pretty well off. I know a bunch of friends who've got comps turning 3 this year (that sounds weird...) and their computers can't even turn on without being plugged in. I'm surprised my battery is so good with this trend going on XD.

I use HP and their battery life sucks. Mine lasts bout an hour and it starts giving me warning that I should plug in but if it dies your stuff saves so i'm not worried.

Then again when i'm home, I run my laptop on high settings so brightness is high, battery usage is high. If you turn it on battery saving, then it should last about 2 hours on average for a good laptop.
