Madonna is expected in Malawi on Sunday as the star's plans to adopt a second child, a girl, from the poor African country begin to draw criticism.

Officials at the airport in the capital said on Saturday that they were expecting her the following day. They spoke on condition of anonymity.

The luxury lodge where Madonna has stayed in the past has been fully booked and casual visitors have been turned away. International media have begun arriving in the capital in anticipation of her visit.

On Friday, a welfare official and a person involved in the adoption proceedings said the singer plans to adopt a four-year-old girl.

But a British children's charity has urged Madonna to "think twice" before adding another African child to her celebrity family.

Save the Children UK said on Saturday that the recently divorced star risked sending the wrong message by going through with the adoption.

Spokesman Dominic Nutt said many international adoptions were unnecessary - and some even fed into a criminal "adoption industry".

Nutt said he was not suggesting that Madonna was doing anything wrong, but said the whole process of international adoptions was often flawed.

He said that, barring exceptional circumstances, children should be kept in the care of their extended families or within their communities.

Madonna's spokeswoman Liz Rosenberg in New York, who has not commented on the adoption reports, said on Saturday that the star would not respond to Save the Children.

The welfare official and people close to the case, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the subject, said the girl's mother, an unmarried 18-year-old, died a few months after the child was born. Her father is believed to be alive but no other details were available.

The girl's relatives at first resisted the adoption but have now consented, they said.

Madonna and the girl's uncle are expected to appear in court on Monday to sign adoption papers.

Madonna was harshly criticised for her adoption of David Banda, now 3, in 2008. Children's advocacy groups accused the 50-year-old star of wielding her wealth and influence to circumvent Malawian law requiring an 18- to 24-month assessment period before adoption.

Austin Msowoya, legal researcher with Malawi's Law Commission, played down concerns that a second adoption by Madonna would violate any laws.

He said the best interests of the child needed to be taken into account - whether this was staying in an orphanage in Malawi or getting "an education with Madonna."

"When you look at these two options, then perhaps it becomes in the best interests of the child to allow the adoption if the parents and the guardians consent to it," he told Associated Press Television News on Saturday.

Reports that Madonna wants to adopt a girl from Malawi have been circulating for some time. But the first official hint came from the star herself last week.

In an interview in Malawi's leading daily The Nation, the singer said she was considering another adoption but would only do it if she had "the support of the Malawian people and government."

If the adoption goes through, Madonna would become a single mother of four. She also has an eight-year-old son, Rocco, with former husband Guy Ritchie and a 12-year-old daughter, Lourdes, from a previous relationship.

Madonna first travelled to Malawi in 2006 while doing charity work and filming a documentary on the devastating poverty and AIDS crisis there. She is also establishing a school for girls there.

I recently heard a story on MSN that she wants to adopt a child even though the childs real grandmother won't let her...Is this the same incident? Because her child adopting habits are beggining to freak me out

Urm... Why would Madonna need publicity? She is one if not the most famous woman in the world plus if this was a publicity stunt she would have something to promote and the adoption would never actually happen. The kid she already adopted had a Father who was alive which I found weird because yes he was placed in an orphanage but surely if you have a shed load of money and want to help that child you would pay for his upbringing whilst he is with his Father. The kid she wants to adopt now I think it's all fine why should she not be allowed to? I wish Madonna would adopt me! Her children truly live a life of privilege.

I think adoption is wonderful but if the child has a fit and alive parent then I don't get why you wouldn't just pay for them to be able to keep their child.

It said on bbc.co.uk/news this morning that it was thrown out due to her never having being a resident of the country, despite the fact she donates thousands of dollars a year to the charities of said country. I think it's good that there is finally someone standing up and saying "look, just because you throw a lot of money at us, doesnt mean you can just take a child that you probably wont see that much anyway". IMO it's basically just a disguised form of child trafficing! I'm glad she was turned down...

There was an interview on the news last night and it was with her son's old nanny, and she believed that Madonna was an excellent mother. I think it would be great for a child from a poor background to be adopted by her. Plus for her son to have a sister from his home country.

i dont think its a bad thing that maddona has addopted another child, that child will get to live a juxerous life and live much longer then what he might have, but the thing that annoys me is that you have to stay in the country for 6 months to be able to adopt but she didnt as was able to get him, thats not fair on other couples who have been waiting for years beacuse they cant concieve or what not
