Here's the gist of it: A multimillionaire Muttontown couple, who run an international business distributing perfume, were arrested by federal agents on charges of keeping two Indonesian women as slaves in their posh Long Island home for the last several years. Are they guilty or are they innocent?
I don't think there is enough evidence to put the couple in jail as of yet. The woman was "wandering near a dunkin donuts." They never say where the other was found, but if she was also on the street, then I'd say they are just two homeless women trying to make a buck off of someone they know has money.
Well, you've got a point there, but would they cut and torture themselves just to do that? What people make for money...
Well to be honest all they have to go on is the word of two Indonesian women who's visas have expired. Seems to me a ploy to stay in the US. But then, thats exactly the stereotypical view that haunts the justice system at the moment so who knows. Personally I doubt they were held as "slaves". Housekeepers perhaps, but not slaves. We'll just have to wait and see.
Well from what I've read. The two women have been working for the millionaire couple for 5 years and only getting paid like $400 and $200 each per month. That's already a crime if it's proven to be true. And they found one of the woman's blood on the door inside the house. So that's pretty substantial evidence for a trial at least. But again the couple went away on business trips all the time so those 2 servants could have escaped anytime...but they said they were afraid the rich couple would use their connections in Indonesia to put their families in jail. Kinda hard to say for sure if the couple is guilty or not but as of right now I'm leaning towards guilty. Could change my mind later as the story progresses.
Rich people have powers, so if they were afraid their families would be put in jail, it's a valid excuse not to run away.
That's what I'm thinking. My bf's from Vietnam and he says over there rich people can bribe anyone to do almost anything for them. Like a rich person can just pay the police chief some money and have a rival arrested or even beaten because everyone over there is poor so money means power.
It's horrible what one person can do to another. They seem to have a superiority complex where they think they're above certain people and it's disgusting to me. But then again what if it's not true? But it certainly doesn't look good for the rich couple as they have so many things against them.
But it is always possible for your blood to be found anywhere. As long as they can put the blood in context with something else then it will be valuable evidence. Until then the defence is just going to argue that it was by accident that the blood occurred. I don't know whether they are guilty or not. Mainly because the media only tell us a section of what is going on (the parts that are going to sell), we never get the whole story. A very difficult situation.
I think they look preety guilty. And why would they cut themselves for that? and in a part of your body that you can damage more than you mean too asweel.
You would be surprised at the modern day slavery that goes on even in the US today! I've read articles about women being taken from third world contries in order to come to America and then when they get here the person takes away their passport and forces them to work as prostitutes. It's really sad and disturbing... So it doesn't really surprise me that someone would take advantage of women and make them housekeepers without pay and physically abuse them.
if they were afraid the couple would put their families in jail then couldn't they just warn their families before to avoid all cops and how can their connections reach all the way to indonesia? thats a little far even for rich people to have connections
Who would want to avoid all cops all the time? I don't even think that's possible for the long term. Also the rich couple are South Asian so they probably have lots of business connections in Indonesia and money means power over there.
I'd like to point out one little error: They aren't slaves. A slave is someone who is property and therefore receives NO salary. Though the monthly compensation they got was hardly enough, they weren't slaves- just underpaid servants.
