Remember, this is for the sake of debate and does not indicate any of my personal beliefs on this topic. Do not presume what I believe in, it is not up to you to comment.

Yea, okay, this one has been raging from the time a caveman cheated on a cave-woman and got cracked over the head with a club.

Isnt it natural for men to just want to reproduce and spread their line, whilst with women its wired to have a man thats loyal for their own security.

Kinda like a game men and women play.

Is monogamy just rules society/religion applied to make everything neater, whilst in reality nature and evolution wants us to 'pop till we cant stop'?

I tend to like the idea of monogamy. I think it's nice for a man and a woman to share their sexual activity with each other only and building that personal relationship. I think once polygamy comes into play it becomes an issue about sex. It also breeds several other problems like jealousy (which is already quite abundant), secrecy and double-mindedness. Nonetheless, it is largely a societal thing. Here in America, it's very illegal to be married to more than one partner. In other countries, it might well be acceptable to have many wives (I don't know of any country today or any part of history wherein women have many husbands, so it's bootless for me to comment on that idea), but I don't really think it was the way nature intended. I don't believe that women were intended to sexsexsex-haskids-sexsexsex-haskids-wash/rinse/repeat. Nor do I believe that men were intended to sexsexsex-movesalong-sexsexsex-wash/rinse/repeat. Just my personal opinion...

    Well, you DID ask... lol

I think monogamy is a better idea because
    1. the ratio of males to females being born is about 1:1, so polygamy will mean more men missing out. Polygamous societies are said to exclude young men, leaving more young wives for the elders.
    2. genetic variety, it's not good when polygamous fathers mass-produce kids because it's pretty much cutting other men out of the gene pool.

That said, I don't mind it if people lead happy polygamous lives, as long as they don't force it on me.

Yes, but that means the men who do copulate are the ones which are the strongest and fittest. Thus by genetics, it will increase the qaulity of the genes overall, enabling smarter, better looking and more capable people in the future. Extending the potential of mankind.

Seriously, this has been the way for about hundreds of million years of evolution. Do you think you have the right to argue with that?

This might be true on some points, BUT like in nature (monkeys, lions, etc) isn't it way more likely for males with a strong genetic line to become the "leader" and have multiple wives? (Like gorilla's have the whole pack) I think it's the survival of the fittest theory. Whilst doing so, might gut out men from the gene pool, but most likely they would have weak genes and would not be able to reproduce healthy offspring.

There is offcourse the ethical aspect of the survival of the fittest, men are way to social for some thing like that to happen. (look at what we do for the sick people, we have billion dollar insdustries in healthcare.)

I think that depends on what you call natural. I will take a leap into the animal world again. The female black widow eats the male spider after it's done mating. To me that doesn't really look like wanting security and stability.

However I do think monogamy is better for humans. We are way to complicated and have way to many "rights" and "wrongs" to ever fully be able to accept polygamy.

Of course I do, evolution is only a theory after all. Human society has changed, men don't need to be athletes to be considered 'successful' and get women. The people who control other people in the world these days are often fat, frail, female, etc.

Nature isn't doing so well at the moment, gorillas haven't been able to adapt to our destruction of the planet and they are dying out along with countless other species. Maybe they did once have the ability to adapt but it has been bred out of them, who knows?

Well, I think nature didn't have time adapt yet, because humans have been taking over the world in a really really fast rate, let's say about 2000 years with it's peak the last 100 years. I think we have develloped too fast for nature to adapt and that it will never catch up, but I do not believe that the ability to adapt has bene bred out of a species, that would virtually be impossible with all kinds of genetic mutations that happen. Though I do not think there will be a species that will ever outsmart humans on this world and we will be the rulers of this planet untill we kill the planet or it's invaded by some outer space species.

I read something interesting in one of my Psych books. There's a little cartoon of 2 people (male and female)

    First scene:
    Guy: Nice party huh?
    Girl: Hi, yes it is.

    2nd Scene:
Girl thought: As a human female, I can physically produce only one offspring a year, so it's my genetic advantage to look for a reliable partner with whom to pair-bond.

    3rd Scene:
Guy thought: As a human male, I can produce many offspring, so it's to my genetic advantage to take any opportunity to procreate.

    4th Scene:
Girl thought: Given my huge physical investment in reproduction, I will not mate without first taking time to make sure that a potential partner has the ability and inclination to share in parenting.

    5th Scene:
Guy thought: I may as well spend that time acting as thought I have the makings of a good parent, while for the time being really only looking for a fit(attractive) female with whom to mate.

    6th Scene:
Guy: So you want to get a cup of coffee or something?
Girl: I was just thinking the exact thing.

SO, when I read this I laughed, but it makes sense. Guys can keep making babies for a loooong time and they have no "wait" time for procreating. While for women its a very long process to go through. Therefore I would understand why some males are more inclined to "propagate" their genes as many times as possible. This could explain one aspect of polygamy for males.

Also, the whole Darwin survival of the fittest is understandable because it applies for humans and animals. But as humans we are more intelligent, we have emotions animals do not have and therefore we carry the sick and handicap with us. This therefore means that the sick and the handicap survive and procreate = Darwin's theory does not apply in our modern day society.

The entire question's probably come up in your mind as it relates to MLTRs in PUA. If not, it's a key point you need to deal with.

+1 to your thoughts on the fact that the men who do reproduce being strongest and fittest. It's not that any more. To quote The Game:

    [/quote]

It also goes with the 80:20 rule that's presented in several seduction schools. 80% of the women mate with 20% of the men. It's like that with a lot of animals, and it was like that before modern societal ideals took over. It's like that for a reason. Look at what Dominique posted above me.

If you want to discuss it moar with me, I'd probs describe it better over msn, just ask me tomorrow.

bad thing i asked a guy once if he knew what Monogamy was.. his answer no joke was a type of wood.. well in technical terms hes wrong but in other terms he was almost right right.. still it all comes down to your preference i have tried both Monogamous relation ships as well as open ones. i tend to prefer the Monogamous as open ones lead to all kinds of problems like aforementioned jealousy and the feelings of not being paid enough attention ...

Okay... I think that there is basis in the whole 'procreation' thing being the basis for wanting polygamy.

Monogamy is practiced in other species, too, though, so it's not just society's rules.

Personally, I think that as long as the couple is honest with eachother, and both parties are consenting, then polygamy should be fine.

Monogamy is just the way to make everyone has his/her own chance to "spread the line",
while polygamy makes human sex a lot more complicated & "bloody".

The truth is,the majority of mankind has been choosing monogamy for such a long time,
though we are still not sure about which is better,
i don't think there is much we can change or argue about.

Like I said in the other thread, I'm pretty into it. I've been learning pickup for about 2.5 years now (and I still say learning, because it's a constant process). If you're interested, PM me.

I shouldn't have even replied here, it's not hugely on topic! Bad Moderator! I mean, bad level 2! Hahaha

But yea, no more about me sarging, talk about monogamy vs. Polygamy plz.

Meh, I don't really think at a point anymore where "evolution wants us to 'pop till we can't stop", and I think society and morals DO play a large part in that. Plus, it just makes living in society a whole lot easier >_> Imagine if everyone just went around everywhere and had kids with everyone they'd met. Things would get complicated quite quickly >_>

Yeah... this is really a question of your own personal beliefs. If the question is one of existence and natural selection, it's quite obvious that the more diverse our selection of genes are, the greater the chance of human survival. But yeah... women aren't baby making machines, and men aren't just tools >.> I don't think we're classified as "primitive" which kind of gives us the ability to choose.
