I am reading this book called "that the world may know" and it talks about some very interesting things. one of them is what right does one have to tell someones story? what right does one have to not tell the story? i was wondering what your thoughts on this were (and recommend buying the book too)
What right do we have? probably because every person is here for a reason, therefore we leave a legacy behind to be told. I dunno
If the story is degrading slash embarassing slash extremely personal, then no one has the right to tell the story. This has happened to me and it was devestating. If the teller of the story is PART of the story, but the main "character" is someone else, then yeah, they have some rights to tell the story but again, refer to the first sentence. If you aren't a main part of it, and it's degrading to the main character, then why tell it? If the story is good hearted, funny (although there is a fine line between funny and embarassing, depends on the person) then it's okay to tell.. I'm really against gossipping so I don't really talk about myself much or about others private lives..
then do you disagree with the way media invades peoples privacy? *regular people who happen to get caught in a firestorm if media and celebrities*
Of course I disagree but like klae17 said, that lifestyle unfortunately requires it.. It's not happening to all famous people. Some people relish on it and that's their problem.
but this isnt really what i'm asking. what about, say a genocide? what are peoples rights to tell stories about this? what obligations do they have in telling the story and what obligations do they have in NOT tell the story?
