MY new phone! I upgraded from my IPhone 3gs to this.. it was recommended. Plus it came with a free 32" LCD TV (good for the bedroom!) Anyone else got one? IM FREAKING LOST! So different to use compared to IPhone.. I'm finding it hard. How do I know what Apps are free.. how do I find Aps?! Anyone know of a way from transfering my contacts from my IPhone to my new phone?
Welcome to Android Junior ! First, you made a mistake... The Nexus One was THE phone to buy. It's the phone Google used to devellop Android, and usually, we get the OS update first + the phone is totally unlocked from the factory And mostly, there's no skin on top of the OS like all other carriers do. Just pure Android. For the apps, you have to use the Android Market. Usually, it's already preloaded on the phone. In term of must have (application name): -WiFi : can turn the wifi on/off from the main screen -File Manager : like file explorer for windows. Need this to install app if you downloaded them manually. -Vplayer : VLC player for Android. You can read everything ! -Barcode Scanner : may seem weird but you can read QR code with it and if you go to the android market using a computer, you can simply scan the QR from the application you want. The phone will then find the program itself and download it automaticaly. You have to try it to understand, assuming you know what a QR code is :maha: For your contacts, if you can sync the contacts with a mail adress on the IPhone, add a mail adress to your account on your galaxy and import them directly from there. I'm not aware of other ways since Iphone sucks ! Also, unless you plan on flashing a new OS image on your phone, don't "root" it. Useless and you can't really unroot a phone. Bad for the warranty. Finally, open an account there. It's free. It's totally dedicated to phones and there's a nice Android section with lots of games and apps totally free: http://www.ipmart-forum.com/forum.php. You can download APK files, witch are the installer file for android application, outside of the Android Market . Just send them to your phone using an USB connection and install them. Much easier than the App store, heh ? I think that's all... If you have any questions, lemme know :yup:
This is wrong tharoux, you don't have to have the Google-developed phones to be able have OS updates. Especially since you can flash NAND ROMs and RAMs via SD. Now, Stock Android is available for almost any phone, and Gingerbread has been ported to Samsung Galaxy S. I have a question for you Junior: what version of Galaxy S do you have? The original, or a different version (aka Vibrant, Captivate, etc.) The phone I would've gotten and I have gotten is the HTC HD2 (Windows Phone 6.5), but I've flashed a Gingerbread ROM to it. The ROMs are ported over almost as soon as any phone gets a newer version of Android. There are so many options for the HD2, including ported over ROMs (and RAMs) with HTC Sense Froyo, Cyanogenmod, etc. For WiFi, tharoux, it is already pre-installed on the phone. You can add a Settings widget and toggle Bluetooth, Airplane Mode, WiFi, 2G/3G data, etc. and it is simple but there are a ton more apps for this. The vital apps I have include Memory Usage Plus (auto-kills apps once they drop into 400-500 priority for Android, $0.99), Battery Booster (free), Handcent SMS (upgrade of stock or TouchWiz SMS messenger), LED me know (LED notification manager, free), Android Assistant (12-in-one, free), Barcode Scanner (like tharoux said), ES File Explorer (like tharoux said), Titanium Backup (backup and restore your phone), Spare Parts. Also, you might want to install Droid Explorer on your computer so that you don't need any apps or anything to connect your phone to the computer through USB. As for contacts: http://www.androidmeup.com/articles/tra ... ew-android Just sync your contacts with Google Contacts through iTunes. Either that, or you could also somehow get the contacts off your SIM card. Or, if you get the contacts off of your iPhone, you could put them on an SD card and import them through the Contacts app. For rooting, unless you are an advanced user (like me, since I always update my ROMs), like tharoux said is bad for your warranty. If you are planning to do more than just mess around with the phone without changing the OS, I suggest not to root, but if you are taking some of my advice from above, you might want to root your phone. Any questions, just PM me, I've been around Android, and unlike tharoux , don't just use what the manufacturer gives me out of the box.
Don't try to pwn me Lightning, or I'll ban you ! j/k j/K XD I just want to clear something... I'm aware you don't need the google-developed phone to get the os update... What I meant to say is that from every normal person who don't mess with there phone much, USUALLY, you get the update first. BUT, it also depends on your carrier. That beeing said... I totally forgot to write about Memory Usage Plus and for an unkown reason, I don't have the WiFi widget on my phone from the factory. I had to install one. Maybe I just missed it too but I don't care, the one I got is working just fine. Btw, congratz on installing gingerbread on your HD2. I wouldn't have done it myself... Considering that smartphones now cost as much as a laptop, it would break my heart to brick one ! And if you're not happy with what the manufacturer gave you, maybe you took the wrong phone XD
So true, I barely was allowed to get the HD2...at first, I was afraid of bricking it because if you screwed with anything while installing the HSPL, you are dead. As for the bold, tharoux, I don't think so. I mean, no one would buy the HD2 with Windows Mobile 6.5 even with HTC Sense -- so that's why you do have to screw around with the phone to get what you want. I mean, $200 for a phone that has Gingerbread, 5MP Dual-LED camera, 4.3 inch Capacitive Touch display (LCD) isn't all that bad. Compared to the $500 Nexus S, which doesn't have a whole lot more ....
Okay. I finally got my contacts over via Google Account. It's all linked to my youtube now too Figured out the Android Market. It's just called market. I have a notification bar which includes a wifi on/off button. So won't need that. Mine will be on 24/7 anyway The recommended programs sound good... I might look into them soon. For now.. bed time. its 3am again
Yeah, that was a reported problem of the Samsung I despise Samsung's Touchwiz UI because it makes things more confusing, so contrary to tharoux's *cough*ridiculous*cough* suggestions, I think Juny should flash a new ROM.
...Wait if its on all the time plug the charger in? The Wifi chews the battery eh? As long as it lasts me a day, (two at max) then its doing better than my IPhone
Some people complain that the Galaxy S (especially adapted version for T-Mobile US - the Vibrant) has some problems with the battery. I can't say anything because my HD2 lasts about 1 day on medium/heavy use because it is a used battery...with WiFi on. WiFi actually shouldn't make that much of an impact on the battery, but there are apps that automatically turn off WiFi when you lock the screen. More apps: Dropcap2 Torch Google Voice
I cannot find VLC Player for Android? I found VLC Remote (assuming it acts as a remote for VLC on a computer?) So if you're watching something through it on a media center then u can stop/pause etc. from your phone. But not the actual player. Still trying to work out how to change my dang background and put a decent ringtone/message tone on I hate getting new phones. I get so used to old ones and hate adjusting. And This Samsung has a rather confusing layout.
Change background: Press and hold an empty space on a homescreen, or I believe if you press the menu button (if you have one) on the launcher, it will give you settings of the wallpaper. Ringtone: Ringtone can be changed in Settings, or you can use the Stock Music player and play a song. Then press the menu button and Use As Ringtone. You can also edit so that certain contacts have a different ringtones (using the Contacts app)
Haha yea I finally worked that out. Now to transfer all my images/movies from IPhone etc. Any solution to the VLM player for andoid? I seriously cannot find it in the Droid MArket. The other programs I've not looked for yet.. Waiting for my new screen cover to come. For anyone that wants to protect their screen from scratches, Exim Spuc is the way to go. A tad expensive, but they're bloody good. Never let my IPhone down once
Junior, once you get used to the Android OS with a med-high end phone, the iPhone will be nothing compared to it. Oh and I accidentally got my hands on a Samsung Vibrant (my friends), and I can see why you are confused by the interface. Touchwiz is ugly...
I'm finally used to it and loving it... [REMOVED STUFF ABOUT EMULATORS AND ROMS AS I'VE FOUND MY ANSWER THANKS TO A LINK ALREADY POSTED] Edit #2 No I didn't.. they don't work. I have SNESOID Lite and NESOID Lite. Looking for games (roms). PM if you can help... Keeping in mind its against the rules to discuss this on the forums
It's the same roms you can fine over the net for the emulator on PC. Or install the app "Rom Gripper".
I downloaded two from the site you already linked too. And they don't read on the NESOID lite / SNESOID Lite. Whether its because I have lite and I needa buy it.. I don't know. If I like it I probably will buy the full version. Mario rawks!
Sure you got the right one ? nes one should have .nes extension. For Snes, it's .smc I literally took the rom I had on my pc emulator and dumped them on my phone and it's working flawlessly.
Rom Gripper worked fine Happily playing Super Mario 3 on my phone. Controls are a tad hard... but what can ya expect from a phone
