I'm tired of Vista, it uses too many resources and makes my good system, well, not so good. I refuse to go back to XP, so Windows 7 is really my only option. I'll be using the RTM build (7600) which I actually also have on my laptop. It's Ultimate x86, right now I have Vista Ultimate x86.

    Opinions?

I think upgrading is really up to you, whether you like vista or not {So far vista is not causing problems so I choose not to upgrade}.
If you're upgrading from XP it might be nice.
Just make sure you have a good enough graphics card to support Windows 7.
My friend had to downgrade because her graphics card can't handle it.

I prefer Windows 7 to any other Windows version, and have not had any problems with driver support. Everything worked out of the box, although Catalyst was available from AMD (specifically for Win7, at that).

However, make sure you buy it - don't use the beta or RC, because there are still many bugs, and it would be a pain in the ass to have it stop working in March.

I upgraded to Windows 7 once, and I hated it.

My laptop could not handle it, and it was starting to laggy and such, so I had to downgrade it back to Windows Vista.

But it depends on whether or not your computer can handle it.

Ignore all the Linux-lovers, unless you're going to be hosting websites or game servers it's really not for you.

I've just upgraded my Vista Ultimate to Win7 Ultimate (both 64bit) and so far I'm in love.

    Current specs:
    Intel Core2 Quad 6600 (OCed@3.0ghz)
8gb OCZ Gold (can't remember what speed it's at lol)
    generic motherboard
EVGA GeForce 8800 GTS 640mb (OCed GPU)

and let's just say... it's running like a bat out of hell. Go for the upgrade, you'll not look back :)

You forgot, "If you're totally awesome!" in the list of reasons why you'd use Linux.

What is so seriously "good" about Linux? Oh wow, it's free... Wow, you have to emulate windows to run half the stuff.

It's like when you make a Kit Car... sure, you build it yourself, but you still look stupid in it ;)

I've decided to go ahead and upgrade. Thanks for all your opinion, oh and Linux? No thanks. I live off compatibility.

I had windows 7 but while trying to play some games and use other tools, the programs/games will not work due to incompatibility with windows 7.

Alright well I'm on it right now and I'm loving the speed. All my drivers seem to work alright, plus this isn't really a gaming rig, so I pretty much already have what I need. Might go and install WoW later ^_^

It's truly great, although as toesocks (nice name, haha) said, the task bar is a little weird D:

You get used to the taskbar, eventually. I actually really like it, now that I'm used to it.

Windows 7 is way faster than Vista & XP. I lag in games though like COD4.

yeh, it has problems with a few games at the moment, but those issues are going to be fixed, so just sit back and let Micro$oft do the work :)

I'm not going to put in on my main PC yet, I'm going to wait until around Xmas to do that (after release and a few fixes were made for any issues, etc).

    Took the plunge, it's now on my main machine and working great. As for XP lovers; it's getting to be an old OS and support from Microsoft will most likely be terminated very soon with 7's release. Might take longer though, since netbooks are sold with a copy of XP on them ;_;
