Mkay, so I'll be taking the SAT soon and need some books to read to up my vocab. Actually, I'm more so looking for entertainment, but the vocabulary will just be a plus. For starters, I hate... god, I hate nonfiction. I like short books, although I do make exceptions for amazing storylines. The reason I like short books is because it fits my attention span. I haven't finished a book in a little over a year. o-o I'll get to the last few chapters and just stop... So, any recommendations? Just to get an idea of what books I normally read, my last few books have been - Catch 22, Great Gatsby, Watchmen, Running With Scissors... That's all I can think of. Oh, and the Hobbit. I also plan on getting one of those SAT vocab books. It's just a short book, simple storyline, lots of big words.
Thanks for the rep You do know that using books is the same as playing cliffhanger? they both do the same thing
Shit.... i read you whole post wrong!! i thought you were trying to get your pets intell up via reading books!! lmao.. it is 2.21am here
epic fail Get one of those SAT prep novels that define difficult words for you on the side. I think Kaplan has a few.
o-o I thought you were making a joke, but that works too. As for the SAT prep, yeah I'm getting those soon enough. I'll probably get two or three. In the mean time, I need some good old fiction.
Read some classics (but not stuff like Shakespeare that's old english) Stuff like: - Frankenstein - War of the Worlds - A Tale of Two Cities - Les Miserables
my post isnt about neopets..but it does try to answer your question...x__x.... my reading score was 680 and the way I studied was just taking tests from practice books, correcting the ones I got wrong and figuring out *why* I got them wrong. heres a little tip.. each section of the SAT goes from easy to hard difficulty inside of each section.. so.. you'll start out with something like "the ice is _______ a. cold b. hot c. stuffy d. big" (bad example but you get it) and then they get progressively harder. i made like... 200 flashcards and i didn't see any of those words on the test. i had to rely on the words i learned in Honors English classes mostly and my prior knowledge. chances are at the end, you wont be having super hard, long words, but words that you feel like you should know but just can't quite remember what they mean. ummm~~~ hmm, im trying to remember more... it felt like a long time ago the important part is recognizing patterns...basically learning how to answer the question. if you are a smart person already, most of your work now is learning how to beat the test... like, recognizing this kind of thing (it will come with practice): "Although yesterday she was feeling _________, today she's feeling __________" recognizing that those are opposites, and looking at the choices to see which are opposites. etc. stuff like that. ok, that had nothing to do with neopets or books, but that's what I did for prep. x_x
It wasn't supposed to be about neopets. x) too_old is just senile. Thanks for the advice although I've read that SAT prep novels have a lot of the words that are actually on the test. Even so, I plan on getting the HUGE blue SAT cliff notes study prep book along with two novels or so. Thanks for the list. I have already read those in the last three years, but I'll definitely reread them.
