A Dutch TV company are going to be going ahead with a tv programme whereby a terminally ill woman chooses one of three 'contestants' to receive her kidneys. You can read about it here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/6699847.stm So what do you all think? I am absolutely disgusted by it. How can you reduce something as serious as this to a reality TV show? As for their argument saying it will 'highlight the country's shortage of organ donors', I think there are other ways to go about it. They aren't highlighting the shortage, they're exploiting it.
Well I dont think I have any Dutch shows around here. But it is deffinately wrong and wierd. The only reason I can think of anyone ever doing something like this is for the money. I think if they need the money for the operation then they might ask TV shows to produce it. But I dont think it is right at all!!!
How can that even be considered entertainment?? It should be dealt in courts, not in a TV show that's stupidily dumb >.> Down with that show.
OMG. I thought I was seeing things. I thought it was a joke. Obviously it is not. I only have one kidney myself and there is a chance I could loose the other one. So, from the point of view of someone who could need a donor. This is downright disgusting. A kidney is being given depending on whether the donor 'likes' someone or now. It is ridiculas. Kidneys should be given to the next person on the waiting list (of course, as long as they are a match). Not to anyone who 'pimps' themselves out.
I just read about that on the BBC news site. What a disgusting way to get ratings. I hope it fails miserably and no other network would ever try something like that again. If you want to highlight the need for more organ donors there are many other more appropriate ways of doing it.
what did you expect from the people that made big brother? as unethical as the show itself may be, it is serving the intended purpose of sparking discussion about the shortage of available organs
disgusting yes, but it's highlighting shortage of donors and will hopefully increase the chances of more people donating. still shouldnt be done though.
Do people actuallly pay any attention to this type of programme though? Are people going to sit there and then go yes I am going to donate a kidney or whatever part of my body? IMHO, I don't think watching a programme like this would sway me either way. I would want to look at books or items on the internet which would have more scientific content. (As I said this is just my opinion, what do other people think?)
I saw this on CNN. They were talking about it and if it would actually attract attention. I seriously doubt that anyone would want to watch this kind of show...
There are always people out there who would love to watch this type of show. That is just the way of the world today.
programs like this may give people the idea to donate and look into it, whereas before they thought sack it and dont bother. I agree the show is horrible but theres gonna be some good coming out of it. However it still shouldnt be shown
Quite honestly, I don't see too much of a problem with it. Yeah its making a bit of a joke of something that is deadly serious, but is it not the donor's choice? And the participants are getting WAY higher odds than if they were just stuck on the transplant list. 33% of getting a kidney is damn good going. At the end of the day, it hurts no-one. One of the 3 participants will get a kidney, the dying lady gets to donate her's and the TV company makes money. I do think quite a few people will watch it. It's human instinct, curiousity. Many people will say they won't but they will end up so.
that is terrible, you know something is wrong with the world when people need to have a contest to get a kidney and other people enjoy watching them. the worst part is that theyre taking advantage of that poor woman just to get money, its ridiculous.
I'm actually not too surprised at the development of what passes as entertainment. I mean we watch people competing to marry someone they barely know. We watch people being stranded in the middle of nowhere left to fend for themselves while the television crew sleeps in a nice hotel somewhere. I even heard about a show somewhere in Europe where the contestant needs to steal a car and avoid being caught by the police for an hour and if they succeed they win a million dollars but if they get caught they go to jail.
Today we were talking about that in biology...What I think?I agree it is disgusting...I mean I thought we were at the 21st century but then again watching things like this makes me think that even with all the technological progress we still have the Mentality of the Middle Ages...3 people fighting for a kidney? for god sake... It is just like the ancient rome -_-where the final decisions about the fates of the gladiators were decided in a big arena...the only small difference is that the fate of 3 different people is decided in a Tv show  Thumbs up or thumbs down
Yea it is true that we are watching a lot of different things that relate to the Middle Ages. It is really quite sad that stuff is happening like this but I guess its just life now.
TV kidney competition was a hoax Picture shows the three candidates in the Big Donor Show that aired on Friday, 01 June 2007, in Aalsmeer. The 'contestants' were all in genuine need of a kidney A Dutch TV contest that purported to show a dying woman choose a patient to receive her kidneys was a hoax.
