So have you's all heard? They kept measuring how much oil was about by looking at satellite images of the oil in the gulf, but it turns out that becaues BP injected chemicals to break the oil down, it didn't completely break it down, just made the particles smaller, so now they can combine with water and don't come to the surface anymore, so now they've found an oil plume under the water that was 10 miles long, 3 miles wide and 300 feet thick. Ah this just gets better and better. Curious how much BP's gonna have to fork out to fix this one.

It doesn't matter how much money BP will fork out for the fix. The damage has been done and it will be irreparable. The environmental damage from this spill will have a negative effect on the entire world, and it won't be anything that money can fix unfortunately.

I heard somewhere they are being fined hundreds of millions... But like mentioned above, nothing will fix the damage caused.

I wouldn't be surprised if BP actually go out of business from this.. They've already lost alot...

Actually... They only have to pay (by law) 75 million, but they are being urged by govt and greenies to pay about 500 mil.
And erm, they won't go out of business. They make over 600 mil every 3 months according to the news.

*sigh* Some company's are just so gready, you think that if they are making 600 mil every 3 months that they could plan things proplerly.

Also they should be putting way more back into the enviorment as part of a requirment for taking oil out of the ground. We are all going to be so screwed if things keep going as they are.

Kurt Vonnegut wrote "if flying-saucer creatures or angels or whatever were to come here in a hundred years, say, and find us gone like the dinosaurs, what might e a good message for humanity to leave for them, aybe carved in greate big letters on a Grand Canyon wall?"

His suggestion for the message our civilization ought to leave was:

" WE PROBABLY COULD HAVE SAVED OURSELVES, BUT WERE TOO DAMNED LAZY TO TRY VERY HARD..... AND TOO DAMNED CHEAP."

Read this out of AL Gore's book: Our Choice

I have only started the book but it points out a lot of issues. And the photography in it is amazing.

Well, money and greed runs the world, I guess considering how many people are greedy it's hard to blame the others. If it's not gonna be them, then the next guy's gonna do it in a blink.

And it wasn't just BP's fault, I'm sure they didn't want it to happen (obviously), but the us govt. set up a company to monitor and ensure that business like BP keep certain standards to avoid such accidents, however... These govt. bodies probably got taken out to some really nice dinners and were paid some nice imbursements, so they were more on the gas giant's side than anyone else and close their eyes to a lot of things. Aaaaah well, greed kicked in once again yo'.

I think that the blame needs to be placed with the drilling company - they must have known that there should have been some kind of contingency plan in place for such a scenario - I mean when you are talking about drilling into the earth that is miles below water you have to know that there is a fair chance that something might go wrong. When you're drilling at a depth like that standards go out the window - it can be all left up to mere chance, and while it is nice to think that accidents such as this can be avoided it is extremely unlikely and there needs to be some kind of plan in place for when the accident actually happens.
If BP had planned ahead they might have been able to curb some of the damage that is being incurred. Unfortunately though at this point the damage has been done and cannot be undone (regardless of the amount of money that can be thrown around).

Did BP not consider what would happen if they injected a chemical meant to breakdown the oil and it didn't work? I don't understand how they could not have completed studies on the effects of said chemical and could not have know what would happen. It's just terrible. It makes you feel like the environment is doomed when the people responsible are hardly held responsible.

Its not just the fish that are going to suffer. Yes the fish are propably the first to go. But the scary part is that fish are only one part of the life cycle of the area. This will affect lots of other animals and plants that lived off or with the fish. :|

not to mention the hundreds of thousands of fishing/marine jobs that are going to suffer - not just in north america, but throughout the whole world.
