What exactly is the currency to buy accounts + pets?

With what money do people buy accounts? I know this is a newbie-ish question...I am just kind of...unclear on the concept.

You can buy account in USD but most people ask for NP
I have seen no-one asking for GBP which is strange, because there are a few UK users.
