Something I've been wondering for quite a while. Why are some people so moody about users posting on 'old' threads, if it's something that keeps the forums alive? I mean, if it was a thread like blackmarket ones a few pages away, it'd probably mean the original poster had already found a seller or buyer, and thus, it'd be wrong to simply have a stranger bump it up, instead of just PMing the OP. But discussion threads? I'ms just taking for instance general-chit-chat-f6/unreleased-neopet-colours-t32776-15.html where a mod editted this person's post with a warning for posting 20 days after the last post.. So what, really? It's a fairly interesting thread o.o I just.. really don't see any harm in it. (Note however, I'm not complaining or crying over it xD Not like I dig up old threads, but I'm just against this common 'rule' some try to implement and I have yet to understand) Sorry for the rough english, I've got a huge headache, unallowing me to word-out properly xD
The problem arises in limiting peoples spam, no one likes signing on, clicking view new posts, the right hand side shows 60 posts by a new user, as they can post anywhere they want. However, I was thinking of creating a topic to remove the rull. As it is essentially harmless.
This is definitely how it should be. It is understandable that some threads may get overlooked and someone will find one weeks later and have important input. That should not be gravedigging. However, it becomes can issue when new members show up and decide to post random crud on every single thread in existence. I suppose the rule isn't particularly necessary though since the posts that break the rule would fall under a spam rule anyway.
I report people for grave-digging. I'll be honest. It pisses me of when I come on, look at active topics and see the whole page filled with one user, just posting to get their post count up, ALL INACTIVE TOPICS. I understand they want their post count, thats cool. But what is the point in posting in a thread that's ove... say 15 days old? I'm fairly sure that if the original person who created the thread actually wanted more input they would have bumped it them self yea? It's not hard to get a post count up, posting in active threads, with some sort of input. I do feel bad to an extent.. but heck, I'm used to being the hated one And its mainly newbies I seem to report.. (they're the ones who usually do it...) I make it my goal to post on their introduction board with the rules.. If they fail to read it then I don't have to feel as shitty reporting them
I agree.. the gravedigging is only a problem when it's a spammy post, which could simply just be reported as spam instead. I don't see the problem with getting rid of that rule since some subforums are less active than others, yet can still be interesting topics to input on weeks later.
but the problem is there are -so few- active threads I realize I'm new here, but just taking a look around even in the 'General Chit-Chat' board, there are only 4 threads that have been posted in today..
As mentioned above. If you post something that is HELPFUL or INFORMATIVE that helps the thread then you won't get reported for "gravedigging". It's only spam that is annoying where they pop on CLEARLY haven't read anything and try to make their spam look like something special. OR posting something that has already been said by everyone else or on a problem that has already been sorted. 4 active threads a day should be plenty. You'd be surprised how quickly you can get your post count up.. I mean, lookma t mine. I was a newbie once and then, all of a sudden im nearly 1500 posts!
I may be a newbie here, but over time on other forums i post on, post count goes up very rapidly. Although on the other forum there is usually a bit more traffic.
spamming is one Other one i think it could confuse others. Let say threes a thread about this news, haven't got a new post in 20 days. You gravedug, and people would think, 'oh, it just happened?' Of course everytime i reply to a thread I would look at the time of the thread/post being made, but sometimes people miss that and get all messed up xD
I don't see why people dislike gravedigging. Isn't it better for a thread which someone has found interesting enough to reply to bumped up to the top rather than a new thread about a similar topic being created? That way discussion can be resumed without a lot of needless repetition from the previous thread.
Because most of the time, the thread would have been inactive for a long period of time and hence the information may not be entire relevant.
People dislike it because it mixes up new topics with old/inactive topics. I personally don't like gravedigging. Most of it is spam made to look like it is a contribution to the topic--when instead it is just a user trying to obtain more forum cash/ranks/post count.
I think as long as the new post made is RELEVANT and adds something to the thread that sparks more conversation, there is nothing wrong with it. My first day I posted in a Lost related thread that was old - something I hadn't really noticed. I was replying to other people, talking about the finale. After my post there were a number of others - why? Because the post added something. If it's something that fits that bill, there shouldn't be a problem. Useless spam and dull one-liners? That's grave-digging.
There's gravedigging- and there's spam. And there's gravedigging+spam. However, gravedigging doesn't automatically mean the poster is spamming, even if sometimes gravediggers are also spammers. There's some topics that are always relevant, such as the 'what's the safest way to trasnfer NP' threads that get made so often.
I think that a board useful, such as this one, should be allowed to be posted on because i is a fair point from both sides and could create quite a discussion. I think some of the Gravedgging rules are quite excessive, but i do see the reason for the rules. I do like reading othe peoples opinions though
well main reason is that those lazy peeps love to post those FAQ when the ans is in the sticky somewhere.
