So my laptop recently lost all wireless network connection. It can no longer connect to wireless networks. One of the componets in the card isn't working. I've tried everything to troubleshoot it, but nothing worked. I don't need a wireless connection straight to it, i just need some form of internet access. So i tried to use an ethernet cable to link the computer I'm using now (a Mac with Leopard 10.5), and my laptop (a Gateway with Windows XP). My mac is connected to a wireless network which is downstairs in my family room. When i connected them, I get no connection. It fails to get the correct ip from my mac. My assumtion is either it can't get it because of in compadible software, or cause my mac isn't wired dirrectly into a router and is connected to a wireless network instead. If anyone has any ideas or solutions, I'd like to hear them. I'm not looking to spend any money if possible. Thank you
There might be two problems here. One, connecting directly to another computer may not link you to the router as you want. I would suggest connecting directly to the router. (even just as a test) Two, if the above is ok to do. The router may not be able to assign you the "correct ip" because usually the router will try to use the last IP it assigned your MAC, which that IP may be assigned to another computer. You can usually login to your router software (something like http://192.168.0.1 or 1.1) and assign it a static (unused) IP and try connecting again.
so what your saying is your hosting wireless off your mac and you want to connect to your mac from your labtop? if so, I think you need to change some preferences on your mac.. if you can explain more clearly what your doing, I might be able to help you out
I tried this, but it still fails to connect. It will connect ot the router and work, but not if i connect it to my mac. I changed the static ip for the DHCP connect, and it was in the field allowed. Here's a diagram of what i'm trying to do: Router --> My mac thru wireless connect --> My windows laptop thru ethernet cable I can't leave it connected to the router, cause its not in my room. The mac is in my room, and the wireless card in my laptop is dead. is this more clear?
oh ok, so your mac is connected to the internet via wireless and you have a ethernet cable that goes from your mac to your laptop, but it doesn't work? I think you may have to change the "sharing" preferences on your mac.. go to system preferences > Sharing > Internet Sharing > Then once here it asks you which connection you would like to share, and by which method. so you would select Airport and Ethernet Try it and tell me if it works
worked! thanks soo much. I over looked the basic stuff, asuming it was some of the detailed stuff XD I tend to do that ALOT
