I would suggest resetting your computer, but I'm not sure if you have that option. On my computer I can go back days and it just deletes everything that happened between now and then. Once you go back and get your files save them on a CD or something and then reinstall XP Pro and put your files back on it.

Well wen xp instals I belive that it reformats your hard drive. If it didn't it is something out in to prvent people from downlaod a one license program twice. Just reinstall them.

It's all gone, I know how you feel. I have a virus in my PC and I have to reload XP once every few weeks which means I lose EVERYTHING, including any autobuyers I purchase.

You know you can re-download an autobuyer once it's in "Your Programs". Just so you know.

Ok, how did you install windows XP? Did you upgrade or did you reformat? If you upgraded it, we may be able to recover files. If you reformatted, then I'm sorry but you've lost everything.

Hmm.. if you just loaded it straight over your old operating system then everything is gone. But look on the bright side, its a fresh start and now your computer should run abit faster :)

It all depends on how you installed it, I'm afraid. If you reformatted (which it appears as though you did) there's almost no way of recovering any data. Sorry :(

most likely not, if u installed the new installation of windows over the old, most likely your windows based items and directories were overwritten...and consequently lost forever

i think one deletes everything and starts off new and the other keeps all your files but reinstalls windows

Underground_Secrets - when you did the installation, it gives you a number of options, so you'll have to remember what you did.

If you did an "upgrade", then in most cases it'll keep you existing data files and upgrade the system. This would happen if you chose the "Upgrade" option and you were migrating from Windows ME to XP.

On the other hand, if you migrated from another operating system or did a "Clean Install", in most case it would have asked you to format the hard drive, in which case, you would lose everything you didn't have backed up to disk.

Now... to see if you have any files left over, it's a simple process.

Open "My Computer" and right click on your C: drive. Select "Search"

Click on the option: "When it was modified" and select a modification date before you installed your system. The search will bring up all files that were modified before you made the changes.

If you want to limit the search, and you had a bunch of mp3's or jpg's, then search only for those file extensions and the search list shoud be shorter.... but if you get lucky and find some of your files, then the rest should be located close to the ones you found.

If you did a complete format, you won't find anything... and forget about recovering anything as they've already been overwritten by the new system installation.
