Dumb teachers(or professors) are ubiquitous actually,
    especially in college.
well, some of them may not be truly dumb,
just couldn't keep up with the modern world i guess?
Teaching styles, materials, communication ------ all TOO old fashioned

there are some really knowledgeable teachers/professors who just lack teaching or social skills. i believe that's what people think of when they refer to dumb teachers

but i dont think any teacher is really "dumb" lol, they had to take a test to even be allowed to teach

Oh that's definitely debatable. My computer science teacher has the odd penchant for say "irregardless." Yeah....

My maths teacher said that, too! Along with telling us to go back to MATH112 on a regular basis. I wrote a very, very delightful course evaluation on the subject of his teaching. It was quite constructive. And about 150x nastier than it needed to be.
I don't mind when people make up words, but when people make up words and think that they're real...? Drives me the cake up a wall.

Yes. More than possible: Likely even. Teachers are human too, as such, they have a tendency to be occasionally moronic. Usually teachers start out pretty okay, learning the ropes. After a few more years of teaching, they've got it down, and from there they split into two categories. The kind that has been teaching for so long that they've perfected the art, (or at least mastered it), and for them, teaching is a joy, and at least 75% of their students look forward to their class. The other option is the kind of teacher that has been teaching for so long that the school won't fire him and he doesn't give two turds about teaching the subject well or anything else, for that matter, because he hates his job. The former is quite rare, unfortunately. (Not unbuyable rare, but in the 70k-80k NP range). The latter are a dime a dozen, unfortunately.

Nonetheless, i'm quite certain most of them mean well. :)

I had a very interesting conversation about teachers once with my friends. We concluded that teachers are actually sociopaths who aren't quite smart enough to be able to manipulate others in the real world. Instead, they find satisfaction in being able to control the lives of little children.

It is absolutely possible to have "dumb" teachers/professors...
In my videography class, this guy didn't have the first clue to most or any of the movies we watched in class and he said absolutely NOTHING after we watched Swing Kids.
And yes, a teacher who thinks that Nazis have to do with everything he/she teaches could be classified as "dumb".

Lol. I was always taught that teachers are people who are not quite good enough at their field of study, so they end up teaching it. Biology teachers aren't good enough to be biologists, so they end up teaching it. History teachers aren't good enough to be historians, so they end up teaching it, etc. etc.

Of course it is! If they spent all their time studying to be a teacher and learning nothing about real life they would have no common sense or experiences to help out others :yup:

Thanks guys; You've just given me a deep-rooted respect for my own career choice!

Do you know what the real problem is? The real problem is that in America, teachers are constantly faced with morons who think that "Those who can't do teach". It's because of that that we teachers, who end up being babysitters and role-models for children whose parents are too busy with other things to take care of their own kids, catch all of the blame. We end up teaching the necessary things that they need to know to live an acceptably social life, and when they get a D, we hear from their parents because we must have done something wrong.

In Japan, the word is 'Sensei'. The title is held for Doctors, Lawyers and Teachers. Sensei is the highest term of respect, and translates roughly to "Life worth more than my own", or "Life to which I hold more regard than my own". Now THAT'S respect. None of that "Those who can't do teach" crap.

Those that do it well do it to make a bit of difference with this society in which we all struggle. I think a bit more respect is in order.

    [/rant]

I think a nerve has been struck, but I'll be okay. If you'll note my earlier response, I did admit that some teachers can be dumb - but let's keep things in perspective please.

I can certainly agree with the science teacher, however i'd say they are not good enough to become doctors. The history one, not so much.

Umm I think most of them are smart
I think it's us whos dumb most of the time

One time, I was talking to a really... weird teacher about tornados, and he said something about straw going through a tree. that I knew, but he said the tree literallt splits in half, and the straw goes through it, and the tree closes up again.
I was like "are you smoking something?"

They probably guess on things. This is why I don't trust teachers

I think there are dumb teachers. But it's all on personal opinion if you believe that teacher is dumb. Also with how you learn. If you learn better from the book and the teacher teaches that, you won't think that teacher is dumb. However, if you are a visual and hands on learner and you have that teacher. You would think that teacher is dumb because you don't fully understand what's being taught.

Why not? Some schools do not test teachers so there is probably a good chance. Other dumb teachers may get in by leverage over the principal (you know what xD)

I also once had an art teacher that would always give snide comments about stuff that I *technically* didn't draw.
For instance, I wear black a lot (my clothes match all the time, yay) and she was giving some lecture about a new art project and she said out of the corner of her mouth that I could put "skeletons and stuff like that in it" just because of ONE time that I used skeletons as my muse for a different mini project. She also made some comment about blood.
For a while she did stuff like this and it got worse--she almost got me expelled because she somehow thought I was a threat--to the classroom, her, the rest of the school, maybe even society. (which I'm not, particularly--everyone is a threat to everyone else and themselves)
Most of the time, I am compelled to drawing dragons, faeries, etc. Not skeletons.

Yeah, sometimes teachers can get obnoxious with their assumptions.

Well... anyone can be "dumb." The category doesn't have to exclude teachers =.=
I don't really see any of my teachers as "dumb," but I can say many of mine seem ignorant.
But I doubt my own thoughts, since my youth and inexperience at life cannot really compare with theirs... There's no real basis for these sort of assumptions. Any action CAN be explained... though not always to the satisfaction of others.

I have a geog teacher that just comes in late for lesson by 5-10mins each time (the period is 40mins only) and either:

    1. craps for 20mins then dismisses us early for recess
    2. gets a group to present on a topic (randomly choose a group in the previous lesson)

It gives the class the impression he doesn't know anything at all. When we asked him if a certain topic was for the test (he set it himself), he said yes then hesitated and said maybe not.
