In some ways, I agree about healthcare system problems. It took me forever to get in to see a specialist. However. if it weren't for the healthcare, I would never have been able to afford it and I wouldn't be able to afford my medication.

I really don't see why there's so much distaste for Canada. It could be cause they seem like a weaker brother to us but iono...I would personally love to visit Canada, seems like a pretty neat place

    Canada Eh!

    Well neither is America's...

however i strongly disagree with you. The Canadian health care saved my life and saved my parents enormous amounts of money in the process.

I wasn't even aware that America had a bad attitude towards Canada. In fact, based on this article, (http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/Canada/2010 ... 51-cp.html) which i think I'm going to trust over what the people at your high school say, 90% of Americans view Canada favourably. Sure they might make jokes about us, but even Canadians love to make jokes about Canadians. What can I say, we're funny.
Also, about hockey, I think it's viewed unfavourably, maybe, in high schools particularly is that not that many people can play hockey as a hobby. It's too expensive. So you end up with a lot of ignorant people who've never actually watched a hockey game, let alone played one.

    The Great White North Y'all!
I am a Canadian - living on the East Coast - and no I do not fish for a living nor do I live in an Igloo.
I am also Ukrainian, and as with many other Canadians (and Americans) my roots serve to build the fabric of our beautiful country. Yes we are a nation of many cultures and colors, but that is what makes us beautiful and shows our strength to persevere together in this 'great white north' (which for the record is not all white). Canada is a great nation that is certainly more than Toronto and Niagra Falls...there is no other place in the world where you can see the worlds highest tides, and then a few short hours later walk on the ocean floor (Fundy National Park), or visit the beautiful city of Vancouver and take the ferry to Vancouver Island and see whales frolic nearby. Our country has an excellent educational system, and a healthcare system (that does have some drawbacks) that has allowed thousands to have access to high quality care when they otherwise would not be able to afford it.
Yes we play hockey, and yes we are proud of it. It is a forum in which we are able to exhibit our passion for our Country and our people, and for that I do not believe we should be criticized or scorned.
We are polite and because of that we may not have the largest army, but you can bet you bottom dollar (or loonie) that when an Ally is in need of help we will be there to back them with all of our support.
    I am Canadian
I've visited our beautiful West coast and traveled back home to the East.
    I like poutine
    I am bilingual
    I love hockey
and most of all, I love this Country and all of the people that have come together to make it so wonderful.

Edit: - "Canada sort of seems like an inferior copy of the US to many people as they listen to our music, watch our movies, wear our styles, and use our inventions but are just kind of sitting there with no real military or contributions."
    In reference to that ^
Canadian music and entertainment is an industry that has grown enormously in the past 20 years. We have brought a bit our our culture to the world via musical artists such as Celine Dion, Michael Buble, Bryan Adams, Paul Anka, Justin Beiber, Terri Clark, Shania Twain, Nickelback, Our Lady Peace, Simple Plan, Nelly Furtado - just to name a very few. In the realm of theater and television we have fantastic actors and actresses who call Canada home (Kim Cattrall, Keanu Reeves, Michael J Fox, Dan Akroyd, Hayden Christiansen, Victor Garber, Ryan Gosling, Joshua Jackson, William Shatner, Donald and Keifer Sutherland, Pam Anderson, Neve Campbell, Elisha Cuthbert, Sandra Oh, Jennifer Tilley - again, just to name a few)
We are in NO way a copy of anything, let alone being considered inferior.
AS for 'using your inventions' - any American that may have required the use of a heart pacemaker to stay alive can thank Mr. John A. Hopps (a Canadian) for that invention. And what about snowblowers (Arthur Sicard) and snowmobiles (Joseph Bombardier)?
And there is the little thing called the TELEPHONE invented by one Mr. Alexander Graham Bell, who although not born in Canada, made may of his great inventions, including the telephone, on Canadian soil.
So please try to keep it in the back of your minds that although you are one of the World's greatest powers, the earth does not in fact revolve around you and every invention of mankind is not necessarily attributed to American brilliance.

So in answer to the initial question, I believe that Canada does NOT deserve its tarnished reputation and that said reputation has arisen mainly due to sheer ignorance...

Thanks for listening to my little rant :)

I've been living in Canada for a handful of years and I dont understand where all the hostility is coming from especially when almost ALL of the American stereotypes for Canada is not true. I feel like for every American who still think we live in igloos just proves how uneducated they are. I cant even speak for all Canadians because I'm more of an outsider since I moved here from Japan but Canada is a great country and I really rather be here than the states o_O

I have been to canada sevral times. I live in the deep south ( Texas to be exact ), and when I visited EVERYONE was crazy about hockey, the Flames ( i think thats right) and someone else, but I think the flames won the tournoment or series , Idk but it was fun. They had The Flames themed restraunts. To me , most canadians are the most friendly, open-minded people that I have met.

I think it is just a US view of Canada that is so poor, actually. I travel a lot for my age, and i've noticed other countries seem to have a positive view of Canada for the most part.

It's just the negative view here is so overwhelming that it's easy to actually get drawn into it. For instance i've noticed it seems to be a big trend on Xbox Live for Americans to change their flag titles to Canada and make clan tags/gamertags like CanadianGamer343 as a joke just to draw insults and start fights from other Americans. It's not just where i live either, i've lived in 4 different states and it seems to be the same everywhere i go. I remember when i was little and living in Chicago, i broke my leg, and the doctor was trying to joke with me to make me feel better and he was like "hey...things could be a lot worse...you could be canadian", and if jokes are repeated enough it can actually make you form a negative view.

I was recently in Whistler and we are allowed to bash Canada because they do it all the time up there (they also assume that every American is some crazy redneck/cowboy and everyone is killing eachother)-(an actual Canadians words not mine)

I agree about the ignorance thing, it's a really good point.
I'm a Canadian (well, actually from Quebec, which is a little bit different from the rest of Canada but still), and I can also tell that it's a great country. People who asks things such as « Do you live in an igloo ? » or « Do you have electricity ? » just prove that they really are ignorant, and maybe should learn more about a country that is so near to them.
And for the part about immitating the USA, well yes, it might be true. But aren't most of the countries in the world doing so, since USA is quite important in the world ?

But yes, Canada also has bad sides. I think it's a little bit too boring. Like there's not so much to do there. I've visited Europe and USA, and I think these countries are more interesting for tourism. I'm currently living in Japan, and I also think there is so much more to do here. But again, that is only my opinion.

I LIVE IN QUÉBEC, MY OPINION :
I think that we don't deserve this.. the bad attitude is generaly from USA...

Yes ! USA is realy egotistical.. they think that they are the best... Yeah.. you are fat, you have a big army, you have lot of TV Shows... All these things is because you have Money. The Economie is the things that influence a country. In Canada .. we are not copiing your country..! We can watch your Tv show without be identical..!

This is a good point. People who don't know that ... are shit..! How can you think that we live in igloo...! Don't take care too much of your navel and be a little bit more conscious of the planet. Did you know that Haïti get an earthquake ? ( Sarcasm ) ...

If we talk about Haïti... donation :
    Watch percentage of the GDP
    [IMG]

I heard something in februrary or near of this month.. that the amount of donation looks like each canadian gave 7.50$CAN for Haïti..!

Finaly... i think that Canadian don't deserve the bad attitude.. no one deserve a bad attitude

Thanks! And yes, Japan is a wonderful country *-*
I'm speaking a little bit, but am currently learning. As you said, it's so hard.
But I go to school there and also live in a host family, so since everyone around me only speaks Japanese, I learn pretty fast. Even if most of time, in classes, I don't have a single idea of what's going around (teachers speak way to fast and not lound enough)
