How to make a white background transparent?

    I need to make my avatars background transparent, i use adobe photoshop 7.0. and i need help since im not that experienced. could somebody tell me how to do it?

    EDIT> oh shizzle, could someone lock or delete this please. ive found how to do it accidently when i tried to erase the background XD

    Well just in case anyone else wants to know.

    If you have something on a solid color background, you can use the magic wand tool to select it and delete it.

    Then to save it, you should go to

    File>Save Optimized As

    and pick gif, which accepts transparency

    or png-24

    for the png you can only see the transparency if your browser accepts it. Like firefox.
