    Yea, next time I actually plug in the final numbers I get to the original conditions to make sure they work :p I feel dumb. Oh well.

    That's what I submitted too, but now I think it may be wrong, here's my reasoning: Since the decimals we received for the difference and product of the two numbers were decimals JUST beneath 12 and 17, we need to round up on the final product to make it valid.

    answer ends up at 1392.05xxxx etc

    Its nowhere near 1392.5 and if you "round to nearest whole number" (TNT quote) Then 1392 is MUCH closed.

    But wouldn't we need to compensate for the fractions of decimals that we didn't quite reach. For example, 11.897w/e is extremely close to 12, but after you multiply what got you there 100 and 50 times, the fractions that were lacking are going to start to add up to something.

    Idk, mabey I'm just seriously confused. I hope so since I submitted it with the number rounded to 2.

    two numbers.

    X and Y

    the difference between is 12

    therefore

    Y = X + 12

    now, we are told X x Y = 17

    so it follows X ( X + 12 ) = 17

    which makes X^2 + 12X - 17 = 0

    using the quadratic formula (-b (+or-) (b^2-(4xaxc))^1/2))/2a

    we come up with X = 1.280109

    Y = -13.280109

    now, i can't remember why, but disregard the -ve sign

    and we have X = 1.28019

    Y = 13.28019

    Y x 100 = 1328.019
    X x 50 = 64.005

    100Y + 50X = 1392.005

    == 1392.

    can someone explain why you take the modulus of Y?

    i forgot :p

    alex. we all used the precise number correct to whatever DP it was. So there is no rounding anywhere apart from final answer :p

    The answer is 1392 with no other possibilites anywhere :x
