    Neofriends Avatar Tutorial Using Photoshop~!

Start out by creating a new file. Go to File > New. Set the size to the following setting:

Then on the first layer, name it "border". Leave the background transparent. Now, select the layer by pressing Ctrl+A on your keyboard.

Now, we want to curve the corner. Go to Select > Modify > Smooth. Set the Radius to 10 pixels
    [IMG]

    Result:

Stroke the layer, Go to Edit > Stroke and use the following setting:

Then create a new layer below the border layer. Go to Layer > New > Layer or press Shift+Ctrl+N on your keyboard.
Name it "background". Now, there are a few ways you can make your background.
    1. Make your own from the scratch, by using different brushes and C4Ds
    2. Find a nice stock or render and simply drag it in (I use this method for this tutorial)
    3. Mixtures of 1 and 2
    4. Use your imagination! :yup:

    This is what I got:

Don't worry about the image overflowing of your border, we will fix it now.
Select the background layer and Select All. Go to Select > Modify > Smooth. Set the Radius to 10 pixels.
Now select inverse, go to Select > Inverse or Shift+Ctrl+I on your keyboard.
Clear it, go to Edit > Clear
    [IMG]

I don't remember how I make my shinny effect, so save the image below and drag it in, above your background layer.
    Name it "shine".

On the shine layer, hold Crtl and click on the square image:

Use your arrows (up, down, left, right) on your keyboard to position it the way you like it.

Double click on the shine layer and use this setting:

Set the Opacity of the shine layer to 70% (you can move it around, depends on the darkness of your background)

Now, create a Text above all the layer
    [IMG]

Choose your font style and size
Position it at the bottom, use your arrows on your keyboard to move it around.

Double click on your text layer and use this setting:

To enhance your background a little bit, click on your background layer. Create the Gradient Map:

    Choose Black and White:

Set the layer to this setting:

Create a new layer on top of all other layers. Apply Image, go to Image > Apply Image > Ok
    [IMG]

    Saving:

    Done!

    Re: NEOFRIENDS AVATAR TUTORIAL

yeah the program should probably be added into the thread title, otherwise its a little redundant
although I would guess that doing this on any sort of graphic software would be fairly similar, just not exact

    Good guide for newbies.

But Photoshop can be hard for begginers. That's why I recommend Paint.net.

I'll make a guide just like this for Paint.NET if I have more time. :p

I have tried paint.net when i first start, it is EASY to use and understand; but since I start using photoshop.

I personally suggest using Photoshop instead.

It can be some what hard to understand at first, but it's VERY powerful program.

The results would be different using paint.Net, because of the different blending methods, flexibility of the program and etc.

but sure, you should make one, i want to see the result on paint.net too :)

To be honest, that's like telling someone to get a D in math class because it's easier not to do homework.

Paint.net is not as powerful as Photoshop, and it doesn't have as many features.

Back to the guide, it's awesome! I didn't know how to make an avvie, but I do now.

    Definitely +Rep

I'd just like to make a few minor adjustments to this :)
The base is actually a 73x73 pixel rounded square made by using the rounded rectangle tool set on shape layers with a radius of 14 px. It also uses the layer styles bevel and emboss (172px inner bevel) and stroke (1px outside)

alright, thank you..i'll make some changes.

but rounded rectangle tool set...some ppl may not be that accurate with using it.

its would be easier to use smooth method.

i'll make changes on the 73x73

    and

layer styles bevel and emboss (172px inner bevel) and stroke (1px outside)

    thanks

And yes, I made it just like your first picture.
Damn!!!! I was so looking forward to making my own shiny avvie (even if I planned on using the one you made for me and adding a dot to the bottom xD)

Umm, I can't seem to get a picture in.

The picture I want is VERY big, but if I "Place" it, photoshop naturally resizes it to fit my 75x75 pixel needs.

But the thing is, I can't "Clear" it (Edit -> Clear).

I make a new layer called "Background" just like you say, then place my picture in...but then the layer "Background" stops being "background" and becomes the name of the file.

If I just try and DRAG the picture in...photoshop doesn't rescale it...

    What should I do? :C

    <EDIT>

Kinda fixed it, find a way around ^ ^

But now, how do I delete the 4 corners that I "Cleared" before?

Everyone don't have those white left overs...I do :C
